Is this Maytag Washer a DD or BD? Year?

BD or DD???

This looks to be mid-ish 80's and has the orbital (fast stroke) transmission.

Not sure what you mean by BD or DD.   If you're referring to "belt drive or direct drive", that terms refers to Whirlpool or Kenmore, not a Maytag.   Even though this Maytag washer has the fast stroke trans, it's still a "belt drive".

(I went back to CL to pull the interior shot of this washer, but for some reason I don't understand, craigslist has blocked my IP address and I don't have access to CL at all now)

Ohhh ok! I'm still brand new here and learning. I thought that older washers (pre-1985) were usually belt drive (BD) and had the longer strokes. While the newer washers (1986-) were direct drive (DD) and had the faster short strokes. I didn't know that Maytag had their own kind of washer set-up.

I'm still reading lots of the other posts and restoration threads. Loving it! Thanks for everyone's patience, and for taking the time to teach me.

Gracias,

Gabe in South Florida

Ahhh ok! I don't know what to look for on the control panels, etc. I didn't know that a smaller capacity Maytag would only have 3 settings. Thanks for pointing that out!

I just love the older washers and appliances. Especially the pastel colored ones with the lights, etc.

another way to distinguish what kind of stroke a Maytag machine has is by the agitator that's in the machine. Orbital transmission (fast short stroke) agitators have the little triangular fins on the upper part of the agitator.

The older helical transmission (long slower stroke)agitators do not have the upper fins and are either black or turquoise in color.

And since this machine has "reset" as part of it's water level control I would think it's a variable water level control.

Thanks washdaddy!! So this machine has the orbital (fast short stroke) transmission since the agitator is white with the small fins towards the top.

I will wait for an older Maytag with either a black or turquoise agitator and helical transmission.

What do you guys think about Norge or Wards machines? My mom had a Norge in the early 90s and it had a round lint filter on top of the agitator. I remember that it had nice long strokes and cleaned well.

Thanks for everyone's replies! You guys are great.

Gabe :)

Gabe,

Just an FYI. Those Norge/Wards machines that you are referring to with the agitator mounted lint screens are commonly nicknamed burpalators because of the way the water made its way into the filter pan. The agitator had a water channel built into the inside and as it washed the water shot up and out into the lint filter. These machines had a decent capacity and cleaned pretty well but were hard on clothes.

Some people like them, some people don't. You don't find too many of them around but when they do show up if they are in decent condition it normally gets snatched up pretty quick.
