As the question asks...is the current standard Tide powder detergent still a good detergent? I noted some bad on-line commentary earlier complaining that it's not as good as it used to be.

Tide just beat out Persil

I assume that's liquid? I'm wondering about the standard orange box Tide powder. (I just edited the original post to clarify this.)

As for the liquid Tide vs Persil, I have to wonder if there won't be a situation where one wins CR tests one year, and the other fights back and wins the next year...

I seriously have to agree with Bob....Tide with Bleach powder, I was hooked on that stuff since the day it came out....

if I need to pretreat, then I use the liquid version.....

I use standard Tide powder, without bleach. I think it easily outperforms Tide liquid on white towels, I seldom use LCB as a result. I fine detergent. Tide with bleach is too expensive in my mind, standard Tide can be purchased at a warehouse club store for a slight discount. Tide is already too expensive in my mind. I may switch to imported Arial; similar, and my machines can handle the suds.

What's the difference between regular Tide and Tide with Bleach? Both contain bleach. "Sodium Percarbonate" both have it listed as the fifth ingredient from the top.

Powdered Tide With Bleach Alternative (also known as Tide Vivid at one point) was a top-rated detergent prior to the tweaking of the enzyme cocktail in liquids. I believe the last time the detergent was listed by CR, its score was in the mid 70s, which would put it in league with regular Tide and Persil liquids.

Update: Just bopped over to CR and noticed that, suddenly, Tide Ultra Stain Release (liquid) gained several points (it now tops the list with a score of 88), while Persil ProClean 2 In 1, which was tied with the Tide product, lost a few points (composite score of 80)--notably in the removal of grass stains.

Tide must have tweaked the enzyme formula recently, which would explain why Persil ProClean 2 In 1 now trails by comparison.

I stopped using Tide Ultra Stain Release with the arrival of a Speed Queen top-loader. Most Tide liquids are recommended for use in HE machines only. My own experience confirmed that. It didn't clean as well as it had in the ultra-concentrated environs of a modern front-loader. Persil's 2 In 1 is now my daily driver.

Tide with bleach powder for whites and light colored items always seems to work well for me. As mentioned by another member, I pretreat with the liquid at times. Regular Tide, no bleach for other darker items.

Another vote for Tide with Bleach powder. I have used it for years and will continue until P&G stops making it. It works great and the scent is very mild compared to the liquids.

My local Hy-Vee used to stock it but not anymore and I can only find it at Walmart now.

1/4 cup in my good old solid door Maytag Neptune front loader is the right dose.

Frigilux: Update: Just bopped over to CR and noticed that, suddenly, Tide Ultra Stain Release (liquid) gained several points (it now tops the list with a score of 88), while Persil ProClean 2 In 1, which was tied with the Tide product, lost a few points (composite score of 80)--notably in the removal of grass stains.
Hmm. I had serious grass (clover) stains on a shirt and jeans from yesterday's mowing.

This is not a scientifically-controlled test so take it accordingly ...

Washed in the F&P (with a pair of socks that didn't have grass stains - wore boots), warm water with Biz powder (4 tbsp + 1.5 tbsp STPP), lowest water level (manual selected), light soil but with a 2-hr soak (includes 5 agitation strokes every minute for the duration). Better but stains still quite visible.

Washed again, with a large bath towel and wash cloth added and not the socks ... warm water, 2nd water level (auto-sensed), light soil + 2-hr soak ... 6 tbsp Biz + 1 tbsp STPP -- and brushed the stained areas with Persil ProClean 2 in 1. Grass stains 100% gone.

DADoES-- I get great results in the SQ with Persil ProClean 2 In 1, too. No plans to buy Tide Ultra Stain Release (liquid) until they formulate it to work to its full potential in non-HE machines. There was a noticeable drop in Tide's stain removal power when used in the SQ top-loader; although having said that, its cleaning ability was probably still as good as many other detergents. At any rate, I'm a Persil man, now--with the exception of bath linens (Rosalie's Zero Suds) and blacks (Perwoll Renew + Black). Persil 2 In 1, with a little Clorox for loads of heavily-stained kitchen whites, gets the job done.
