I've been catching some flack from the family about buying this old van that I told you guys about a few months ago. I got some of the minor bugs and glitches ironed out, and got it inspected. It didn't need much to make it roadworty.

New light bulbs in tail lights and dashboard.
A good tune-up and carburator adjustment, installed an MSD electronic ignition module
new set of shocks and a front end alignment
lube & oil job for engine, tranny rear axle & front steering parts
an EXTENSIVE cleanup of the interior, including removing all the old home-made paneling and messed up carpeting.
replaced the door and window gaskets.

This spring, I'm gonna start tackling the surface rust on the bottom edges. Luckily, none of it is through the metal, and just barely scratches the surface. Ought to clean up good. The interior is going to be completely re-done as soon as some of the mechanical and exterior is done up.

Still, despite the work I've put into it so far, nobody believed that it was capable of moving down the higway on it's own power. The van is now fully street legal, starts on the first crank, and boogies down the highway quite well. I can take my hands off the wheel, and it will continue in a straight line fine. I took this picture of it sitting in the Target parking lot after doing some Christmas shopping. Seeing an old ragged out van like this with a long-haired hippie looking guy driving it through the upscale part of town I think put a few people into shock! Still, I took this picture to prove to others that it actually run and drive!

I like these old vans

The nice thing about them is that you have an enormous amount of cargo area, all enclosed and out of the weather. Plus you can do what you want with the interior. I prefer less of a panel job and more of a utility.

However, if you want to finish it inside, I have a suggestion you might want to look at.

Home Depot has a white smooth paneling with plastic dividers that "hide" the seems more or less. I used this paneling in both my old dining room remodel (making it nice and snug) as well as in my spaceship that I am building in the backyard.

It is flexible and being white, might look nice inside it and really finish it off. I also got very low pile (very cheap too) black carpeting for the space ship. It dusted off very easily and might be considered. The other thing you might consider is a cargo net meant for pickups, and have hooks available right behind the back seats to stretch this net across when you want it and to take it down when you want. That way, when you are carrying a bunch of boxes--if you do that sort of thing, you won't get hit with any of them at a sudden stop. This is much better than the rattling metal dividers I have seen people put in their vans.

Is there any other seating behind the front?

Just some suggestions for your consideration....

My dad had a 1964 Ford econoline van that he used installing carpet. My brother and I used to love to drive it. I`m sure its still running somewhere!:)

Excellent,

You just don't see those around this area any more.. now I want to dig out my old chevy in the garage and get it running again. Good work getting it back road worthy! What engine does it have? I have a couple spare small blocks sitting around, and many 68 era parts if you need something, let me know and I can check to see if I have it.

snow on the ground ???

Is that snow on the ground in the background across the lot ??? In Richmond, VA ?? I know they or you guys don't get that much snow that often, was just surprised to see that ...........

yep, it snowed about 2 weeks ago. We got a nice little suprise snowfall of about 2 inches or so. If the ground was a little colder, we probably would have had about 6-8 inches or so. Much of it melted in the warmer spots. While we've had a few warm days, there's still some hanging around in some of the spots that stay in shadows. That spot I imagine never sees direct sunlight. That picture was taken last week too. I imagine it's probably all gone now since it's been almost 60 degrees for the past 4 days or so.

Wow

My brother had one of those vans. He hauled all his band equipment in one for many years. Then went into the painting business with it.. He wore it out. I hope you fix it up good.. Where is the Overhauling gang when you need them. LOL
