Suet is the beef version of lard.

Currants are little berries (I think). Anyway, they're a fruit.

I guess Spotted Dick would make good "afters" for Bangers and Mash.

Cock soup is yummy. Even better is cream of...oh, never mind.

There are two sorts of currants.

One sort of currant, is made from particularly small grapes--originally from Corinth. These are called Zante Currants on the box.

The other sort of currant is indeed a berry. They come in white (golden-never have had), red (good--but very astringent), and black currant (purple.) I adore black currant jelly, black currant syrup, and....... The trouble with currant bushes is that they have a negative effect on certain types of coniferous trees. A good, easy dessert with red currant jelly is called Bar-le-Duc, and I make it (there are other versions), by spreading most of a jar of red currant jelly over a block of cream cheese (even the reduced fat, but never the non-fat!) and spreading it on plain, plain crackers. Bar-le-Duc was very popular in the 20s-40s. I like it because it's just good. It looks nice on a "Candlewick" plate, too.

You can buy both animal or vegetable suet in the UK--the vegetable suet is essentially Crisco, a little bit harder/firmer and generally shredded (i.e. in little bits) so it disperses through the mixture then melts at oven temperature. Looks a bit like shredded Mozzarella cheese.

Vegetable suet

OK,, that means I can use Crisco (generically known as "vegetable shortning") in place of the suet. Never seen a beef version here, though one can still buy lard

Crisco, Jif, Duncan Hines---

all of these lines used to be P&G.

Crisco and Jif are now made by Smuckers, and Duncan Hines is made, I think, by a company called Arora Foods (sp).

Pringles are still P&G, though.
As is, I think, Sunny Delite.

Pete, do you actually remember Fluffo? In the states, it was Golden Fluffo, but I don't see any mention of the color in your ad. It was also packaged like Crisco here. Don't recall ever seeing American shortening in a box like that, even during the WWII (glass jars at that time.)

veg, who just LOVES Crisco!

Crisco in a box

I just bought come Crisco that came packaged like stick butter. Rmeber the competing brnads like Spry and Snowflake?
