Just had delivered a Husquvarna rider. I saved up and was able to pay cash. The chap that I had doing it for the last year and a half mowed 2 days ago with very dull blades so the yard needed a bit of cleaning up. Which I did. I feel kind of bad not needing him but I figured 30 bucks a throw 3-4x month, in a couple of years I would have spent enough for a mower. This retailed for $1995 plus PA sales tax. Free delivery

The model is the YTH24V48 I purchased at a local dealer. 48 inch cutting deck (bigger than what I wanted but more on that later), a monstrous 24HP B&S OHV powerplant (waaaaay more than what I need, more on that later too)and this was the very last model with the Tuff Torq K46 transaxle. Going forward, all these models will feature a General Transmission (made in Mexico or China) CVT whose housing is.............get ready..............plastic!

Of primary consideration as one would expect, is cutting ability. 2nd is durability. I was never a fan of so called sealed for life bearings and thus this was the only unit in my price range that has greaseable spindles. The spindle design has a tapered roller bearing and all 3 deck spindles have zerks. As does the front axle and wheels.

Since I will not be mulching or bagging, of exceptional importance was grass dispersal ability. My yard was dry and had left over clumps from the prior mowing. Not anymore. The mower did just fine once I bungee corded the deflector up out of the way. In fact I needed to bathe because so much grass was being thrown around.

It rides ok, has an adjustable seat, turns nicely too, in fact I found it to be very maneuverable considering its heft.

The B&S engine is ok I suppose. I'm not sure I understand the horsepower war companies seem to be having these days. This unit has NO PTO except for the blades so I have no friggin clue why Husky went with such a monstrous engine. I mean for years I mowed rural property in Indiana with a 13HP Ariens that spun 2 heavy blades and not once did I feel underpowered running it. Go figure.

It has a so called fast hyrdostat trans, not sure what the hell that really means but I'm not about speed, cutting ability is the key here. It will move out but with my rough yard, I don't need to bounce around whilst mowing.

the ROS was much better thought out than JD and that was the deal breaker for me. On this unit you can turn the key one position back from run and voila! you can now mow in reverse to your hearts content. On the JD models, you hold in a chintzy plastic button to mow in reverse. Bad idea JD, bad idea.

That's about it really. I can get to the plugs, fuel filter, oil filter starter relay, etc by removing 2 plastic fences on either side of the engine. Takes a basic 12v battery that you can buy anywhere. Motor takes 2 quarts of 30W dino oil. Has an hour meter with a nifty 50 hour reminder of service. Motor has an automatic choke and as expected a non serviceable carb.

Tuff Torq K46 units are ok IF you just mow and nothing else. Dad's Snapper is 6 years on with no issues and all he does is mow. Personally, I'd be happier with an old fashioned 4-5 speed gear tranny but hey, this is 2016 and we're all about convenience.

The dealer services and stocks parts for all their stuff. Nice chap, he was brutally honest to the questions I asked. I looked for about 2 months before deciding on this unit. After a mere 20 minutes of mowing, I'm pretty satisfied with the mowing performance. No it is not the beloved Ariens we had in Indiana, but then again, nothing really is these days. I do know that this is miles ahead of the MTD junk sold at BIG BOX stores. Is is as good as a JD or Kubota? Who knows, but it does suit my needs.

Front axle is cast iron again way overkill for what this mower will be used for.

What is "ROS"?     "JD" = John Deer??

I don't have a yard large enough for a riding mower, even though I'd love to have one to play with (I love stuff like this).    I agree 24 HP is overkill.   A 16 HP engine would probably be plenty for your machine.

Very cool, thanks for the thorough report Ben!

Wow! You really went for it. Your mower is nicer than my car, LOL. Congrats! Thanks for your always-thorough information.

I mow with a self-propelled push mower, as part of my lawn is a hill. Takes 55 minutes with the Snapper set at its slowest speed (recommended in manual for mulching). Glad your Dad's Snapper is reliable. Mine is 13 years old and has needed numerous repairs. Will probably replace it with a Toro when the time comes.

Thanks gents

I will fill in with updates from time to time. It appears to be a good machine for what I intend to do which is simply cut grass. Got a metal gas can at Tractor supply sans the CARB nonsense but it does not have a vent hole so I question how well it will flow. Eagle is the brand I think. Heck it was 10 bucks cheaper than a same sized plastic can!

Next is a grease gun, I lost mine during the move and it pissed me off because it was a USA made Parker-Hannifin too.

Interesting this came up, but someone I know is thinking of buying a new riding mower. I'd pass along the info in this thread, except it's pretty clear the plan is to go to a big box hardware store, and buy whatever is cheap this week... I think we all know this will turn out...

We need a new tractor here. The one now is a USA made Yard Man/MTD from around 1998. The transmission has been on the fritz the last few years now and it's had electrical problems from day one.

CARB cans suck

God help me. And all of us.

BOught an Eagle at Tractor Supply, spent 29.95 which amazingly was cheaper than comparable plastic cans. The link it the one I bought sans funnel.

So far so good right?

Wrong!

Problem 1. I go to fill it up with fresh fuel from my local Sunoco station. Immediately, the effing flame arestor prevents me from placing the gas station nozzle down in the can. So when I went full tilt boogie to fill it up, the screen restricted the flow and I spilled about a pint all over the place. So in order to fill it up, I have to go half click on the pump handle. Waste of time believe me

Problem 2. I used about half tank of fuel playing around this week, breaking it in. Ok I thought, I'll fill 'er up for the next mow session. I never noticed that this CARB POS can is lacking a vent hole. Soooooooo I go to fill my mower tank and its glugging all over the place, dribbling down the short spout, spilling more gas at $2.56 a gallon all over the fender, tire, and ground.

I mean honest to God, have we gone that far down the path towards Neanderthanlism? I am sick and blepping tired of the friggin goobermint running my life, telling me how much water I can use, where I toss my Algore sanctioned EFL CFL etc. and now this, the absolutely most absurd, asinine, goobermint rule since hell I don't know when. Or are we that effing stoopid? I'd like to know.

Well, being the iconoclast that I am, I already have a solution. I'll use a 3/16 drill bit, make a hole and plug it up with some wire or something. I'll also rip out that godforsaken flame arrestor so I can fill the stupid thing w/o taking all day.

I know I know, this is supposed to save us from ourselves but here again is more asinine rules that obviously are not thought out and in the end resulted in spilled fuel, adding to the stuff that makes ozone, smog and god knows what all because some feces-for-a-brain bureaucrat thought it was a great idea.

And I don't want to hear some smartass telling me "well you have to learn how to use a new gas can" Poppycock. I rode a bike when I was a kid to the local Marathon station with a 1 gallon metal can empty and returned with it full. Filled up a Sears 20in push mower and mowed. Guess what? I'm still here, no burns or anything.

I recommend heading over to Youtube...you'll find lots of videos on how to improve these existing cans into something useful. In fact, a cottage industry has popped up for fittings, vents and adapters you can buy for the conversion. I need to make a few modifications myself...when I dispense out of a 5 gal can, it's usually several gallons at a time and takes FOREVER with the new 'integrated vent' design. -C

I have a real nice one I bought through Mantis.  The entire nozzle screws off for filling so I can mix the oil and fuel stabilizer.  When You go to dispense you just push a button and it allows you to fill with no glugging, it fills, release button, it stops immediately.

I liked it so well for the mix that I bought another for my regular fuel for the 4 cycle engines.

I got mine for $9.99 and free shipping.   Just sign up for their news letters and they will send you emails with their clearance and sales each month.

Right now my JD LA145 tractor sits in the corner of the garage gathering dust and cobwebs.Seems every year the right rear wheel goes flat and the 22 HP Briggs motor has to have its carbureator cleaned.I don't like those new "heart" shaped Briggs twin cylinder motors.Wished they put Onan twins in those tractors-far better motor.Hope you don't have carb problems with your Briggs motor. The HP war isn't what it may seem-the nameplate HP on your motor may not b e what you are getting when the motor is in real use.The motors are cut back to meet new CPSC blade safety regs. One reason they put in the bigger motors. The Husky equipment is better built than the JD machines.A neighbor acroos the street has a Husky ZTR he bought from the neighboring Lowes. He "mows" his lawn more often-think he just likes to ride adn drive the machine. It is fun.Tried one-COOL-but expensive.Kohler and Kawasakie are better motors than the Briggs.Of course you pay for these!!

Very nice mower Washman.  Congrats!    I have the much less expensive Ariens  from a couple of years ago.  They most definitely are not the riders our parent's had, so many interlocks.  Your butt in the seat, clutch/brake depressed, blades disengaged, trans in neutral or you can not even get out of the shed.   Similar experience here with the new gas cans a hack saw, cork and funnel  seems the most effective way to deal with them without getting grass clippings or dirt in your tank or fuel lines.  I also use the essential "bungee cord".  Enjoy your mower, it is a nice one.

Just got done mowing sort of

The grass was high in some spots, low in others. So I mowed. I kept the deflector shield down just to see how well it dispersed grass clippings. I'd say pretty fair, after all it was and is very dry around here.

Motor fired right up. Don't need full choke on a warm day. Hydrostat tranny is performing nicely albeit a tad rough engagement if you try to go slow start. Mash it and it really moves out. That won't be relevant unless I have to drive to my local petrol station for cigs should the Corolla not want to start.

To maintain the investment, I blow off all the clippings. Screw the deck wash, I don't see how that adds any value other than to put moisture on a metal deck that will cause rust.

One other carp, well make that two, is first the gas gauge window is useless. I have to shake my booty and the machine to see where the level is. Second, it is very hard to blow off the clippings and accumulated dirt from the fan area on the hydrostat. If Husky designed an access plate that you could remove giving access to it, that task would be much easier.

Again, it is nowhere near the Ariens we used to have but it does the job I need it to do. Like the non union Goodman HVAC equipment, time will tell how reliable this unit is. I'm not impressed with the pot metal deck spindles at all. I doubt they would stand much abuse from hitting things like rocks etc. Thus I always walk the yard first before I mow in case anything is lurking out there. Yet Husky puts a cast iron front axle on this darn thing. Go figure. How about same material for the deck spindle housings?

I have not

had to cut the lawn in a month here. No rain until yesterday (Fri.) morning, and it only showered about ten minutes.
A friend of mine owns a Skag tractor that he uses for his business. He told me most brands today use the same parts from identical suppliers, and they are not the good quality he used to get a decade and a half earlier.
He said the parts began getting cheesier by 2005.
