It's a grass cuttin SOB, well sort of

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Got a new hacksaw

cut off 4 inches of the chute. Will mow this weekend and see how it works

Mowed today, cut it short too, then spread more Milorganite about. I have long since learned that despite 24HP and all that jazz, this non union mower does not tolerate even slightly damp grass lest it clog.

Badly.

In a perfect world, we'd all cut grass when it is bone dry. Alas, we don't live in a perfect world.

Lawn cutting is coming for me as well-and ANY mower can clog in moist conditions-so don't feel bad.For me--less to mow since the water company backhoes have tilled up a good portion of my yard. When the pipe project is over-they will grade and reseed the areas they dug up.the pipeline is going under pressure tests now-they are fixing parts that fail the pressure tests.

Grass was not that wet

mainly morning dew. I took off some more of the infernal deflector chute; perhaps that will help a bit

You can take off the deflector entirely-----BUT BE WARNED--the mower will throw debris upward-not into the ground as the deflector would make it do-so car windows, neighbors windows, your windows could be targets from rocks or pine cones thrown by the mower.I have had mowers clog from dew.I haven't sharpened the blades in my mowers-will wait until later when the grass has been replanted-My B&D cordless mower found a brick-broke it in half!!!don't want to see the nick in the blade. After this season the blades will need some serious grinding-maybe I should get that Oregon blade grinder? The brick was unearthed by the backhoe whiledigging the entrance pit for their horizontal drill that was lowered into the pit to drill under my driveway. The backhoe dug up bricks buried by the builder. They didn't rebury all of them. Also the auger drilled out some,too-the torque of that thing crushed them to bits.McLaughlin Mighty Mole.

yard is clean, that is free from large rocks etc. I walk it every day always on the look out for debris.

Since there are no trees.........yet, I have no sticks or branches to contend with either.

Methinks that B&S has slightly overrated the motor HP output.

I know darn well that I mowed with lesser HP machines back in Indiana and all of them, even the junk MTD, would outcut this beast. My grass is rarely allowed to get super tall, I cut it frequently.

The hyrdostat is nice, the sharp turning radius is nice. I guess the Husky orange is nice too in contrast to the ubiquitous JD green so often seen around here. But for cutting ability on a basic lawn, I have have seen better and I expected better from this unit.

I checked CR for you. While your wide deck mower scored excellent or very good in the categories of mulching, bagging, handling, and ease of use, side discharge received only a 'good' and they noted it "fell short in side discharge mode." Standard-width Husqvarna models scored very good for side discharging. Might you consider using it in mulch mode? That has worked well for my yard.

Much obliged Frig!

I took off more of the chute. Next time I mow I'll find out if it makes a difference or not.

Have not thought about mulching; I'll have to give it a think before I pull the trigger.

You are very welcome, Ben. I grew up bagging/disposing of clippings, but upon purchase of the house in 2002, I noticed all my neighbors mulched. Seemed crazy to send all the cut grass back in to the lawn, but I tried it and have never looked back. No problems with build-up, which was my initial concern.

As with my former mower (Snapper), I believe you'll have to switch to a mulching blade.

Mowed Thu 9/8 with the deck at highest possible position.  Mowed again Tue 9/13 one notch down (10 notches up from minimum).  Can't get in the ditches with the push mower, too wet.  Anyone need free hay, u-rake?

I took the mulching attachment off years ago, it caused too much clogging under the deck.  Also realized recently that lifting the discharge chute (hole & bungee cord, but needs further adjustment) makes for more even dispersal vs. leaving trails of heavy debris.

I use a walk behind mulching mower rather than a rider. I have been mulching for years. I have too much lawn to be bothered with raking or bagging. Keeping the mulching blade sharp is the secret as well as mowing dry grass. After mowing you can't even see any clippings.

We have what is essentially the same tractor, although ours is I believe a 2007 model, and has a 23 hp engine. We used it extensively at our old house and have never had an issue at all. Been through many sets of blades, the sand takes a toll on them for sure, usually one season and they were toast. No mechanical issues whatsoever, I think it's had the spark plugs replaced once, and the oil changed the beginning of the year, each year, along with the mower spindles greased. I mow for a neighbor that has a storage garage across town now, and it's the only time it gets used. Our current yard is far too small for a mower that large, tried it once and it looked awful. I can agree with the chute clogging, I use a bungee cord to hold it up and it works fine. It was bought as a scratch and dent clearance model so the hood is bent and the steering wheel cracked but it hasn't affected anything. It has almost 130 hours on it and still starts right up and runs like new. Doesn't burn any oil to speak of either.

Well the mower has some things right

Headlights....yup they sure come in handy when I mow at 2:00 PM

A rousing, EPA certified 24 HP vee twin no less! So far as I know, I have the biggest, baddest mower in my 'hood.

A robust cast iron axle! Yes! Just what all homeowners need, an axle made from the same stuff as your Lodge frypan! wOOt!

A "fast" hydrostat! By jove, no more pissing around at 2.5 MPH. I can outrun ANY mower in my 'hood. Never mind my yard is as rough as a cob's arse in places, by george I can go faaaaaaasst!

Sarcasm aside, the more I mow with it in very mild conditions, the more I realize it just ain't the Ariens from 1994. No amount of blade changing will ever correct that.

Like other makers, Husky put money and thought into the superfluous rather than the stuff that makes a good mower. Like an open chamber deck that can lift and throw the grass. Like durable albeit more expensive, cast iron spindles. Like heavier gauge steel blades. In fact when this thing idles, you can see the tips of the blades shake. I looked up on Stens website the thickness of Ariens and even JD blades and they are twice the thickness of these. What a shame.

It is maneuverable. It does turn very tightly. The hydrostat, fwiw, is convenient but not nearly as durable as an old fashioned 6 speed Peerless with bronze gears. The hood, a non structural component, is stamped sheet metal. The alternator puts out 16 amps and the headlights are indeed bright enough for old school 1156 bulbs.

The deck needs to be connected to the front axle like Ariens did and Simplicity does on their better models so the deck will more evenly follow the contours of the yard. I've mowed with Ariens for many years and have yet to find a mower that cuts as evenly as it did.

Husky needs more robust spindles and needs to increase the blade RPM by at least 30 percent over what they have now. It is shocking to hear the massive 24HP beast bog slightly in damp grass. Actually it is depressing when you come to think about it. Perhaps 3 blades are just too much for the choked down B&S engine. I don't know.

Like I stated before, I mowed with MTD mowers back in Indiana that can outcut this beast. And that is saying a mouthful because MTD was, and still is, pure junk.

Still, I bought it so I have to live with it I guess. Today I secured an gen-you-wine B&S oil and fuel filter at Lowes. I got some Sta-bil for the fuel in preparation for winter storage. I'm toying with buying a Rizik USA made batter charger..........just in case. I also got under the deck and scraped off gobs of dried, moldy grass that was so rank, so nasty, so utterly nauseating that a billy goat would puke at the very thought of eating it. Methinks that buildup affected the airflow along with the overly restrictive deflector which, btw, is 50 per cent less of an obtrusion thanks to a made in Taiwan hacksaw :)

Finally, I will only mow when it is bone dry unless work schedule or something prevents that. Simply put, this thing cannot handle even the slightest damp grass. Funny how an Ariens with a Junkumseh engine spotting 11 less horses did that and then some.

Funny or tragic? Depends on your perspective I suppose.

My parents Yard Man (MTD) (bought from Montgomery Wards in 1999 when they were closing) has no trouble with soaking wet grass even. Hell, that thing cuts mile high lawn with no issues. It's been neglected and abused all its life too. The Kohler engine got rebuilt in 2010. I think it's still fine except the hydrostat tranny is temperamental in its old age.

All of my mowers are set for mulching. The electrics do surprisingly well-even pine cones are reduced to dust.CSPC regulations now limit the blade speeds for mowers.I would also like to see them increased. That is what limits the power of motors found on new mowers. The nameplate on the motor may say 24Hp but the real output is less. The motor's governor has been adjusted at the factory to lower the speed-thus keeping up with the CSPC safety regs.So as you mow-you just have to go slower.I did when I had my JD tractor-did just fine.So many folks with rider mowers want to go at almost supersonic speeds.Too many commercial lawn service ZTR mower drivers go too fast-a "hacky-choppy" job results the grass is pushed over-or beaten by the blades because the mower is being driven too fast. The service that does the lawn around the building does this.Probably too so they can come next week and do a hacky-choppy job.

from what I found

Around 1995 the OPE and CPSC dropped the FPM speed of blades to 19,000 max. Of course that does not mean each maker is going to design a deck/blade/spindle to that limit, just means that is the max FPM they can go to.

Which explains plainly enough, why our 1994 Ariens cut as good as it did, even with a 13HP Junkumseh engine.
