Okay, the ghosts, witches, and all that sort of stuff to me are great entertainment, but aren't really all that scarey. So here are a few things that will frighten the shorts off of me. What are some of the things that give you the shivers?

Jellyfish. OUCH Sharks don't scare me, but these graceful, but painful little buggers certainly do!

Fire: Well, under the right circustances, fire is useful, out of control however, the thought of my home or someone (or anybodys for that matter) buring up is pretty serious stuff.

Wobbily, rickety scaffolding, and other above ground support: I'm not really afraid of heights that much, and I will crawl around all day on lighting trusses and other overhead equipment. BUT if that stuff starts shaking, swaying or vibrating, I'm off of it RIGHT AWAY!!!

Unemployment: I really enjoy my job, and it's also nice that I get paid for it. I cannot stand to see someone work hard for what they are, and then loose everything. I've got some savings, but I'd rather keep it, and besides, I hate going through the interview process and all that crap again!

Big storms: Many of you all can probably relate to this living in Florida or Louisana. We had Hurricane Isabel a few years ago, which was an F1. We had over 78% of the state without power, trees down. Luckily the loss of life and home was not too big. Still, the sideways rain and all the splitting trees around me were frightening... That was stuff that could really harm you! If that was a free sample of what a storm will do, I don't want no more than that! I got my hurricane thrill ride, that was enough!

Drivers / driving: 37,000 people were killed on the road last year. While most people are afraid to fly, I'm that way about driving. This thought goes through my mind whenever I turn the key. Especially when I encounter one of the many people out there that just don't care about being safe behind the wheel.

Divorce: I am not married now, although I am seeing someone. I cannot fathom the heartache and hurt that someone can suffer having their beloved children taken away from them, and then being forced to only throw their hard-earned money at them yet not even being able to see them. I'm a man, and men typically get the short end of the stick in a marriage breakup, loosing kids, loosing a home, loosing everything that one works for in life...literally being put out on the street with nothing but the clothes on your back not because of a random force, but at the hand of another person!

What scares me the most....

Is the short-sightedness and egos of the human race.

is that the world is round-- What you give, you get back. (So why do people insist on complaining and being negative?)

is that people don't see that only love is important and is the only thing that remains behind when you go. All other things are illusions.

is that society condtions the masses to chase the same things and to get them no matter what. Why do we need to be on THAT mouse excercise wheel?

is that people actually believe you really need tons of THINGS to be happy? [My grandmother had ONE frying pan and ONE soup pot and two medium saucepans; ONE baking sheet and one roasting pan. NO ONE can out-do her cooking IMHO.

it scares me how we pollute the earth

it scares me how we waste resources.

it scares me to think of the SH - - we put in our food.
(I saw a stack of cooking oil bottles against a wall in a restuarant..."Includes methyl-silicone- the anti-foam ingredient!!! UGH!!!!!

Sorry not to get too deep. Just be thankful for everyting you have an everything you don't have..cause one day it can leave you!

Always keep the inside clean and pure and good and kind. The outside will fade away slowly or can be destoryed in an instant in one "good" car-wreck!

My apologies if this comes out negative. Not meant to be!

Yep, you've mentioned some things that worry me too. Still, I'm of an engineering mind, and my thought is while we can dwell on the bad things, we ought to be striving to make them better. I won't complain about things unless I at least try and think of a solution. For instance, hurricanes? well, I think we've done a pretty good job of defending against them. Yes we did have a lot of property loss, but when you consider the Tsnuami in southeast Asia and what it did, you can thank our building codes, emergency services and the like. Still, there's room for improvement. Now that the storms are past, we need to go to the drawing boards and design better homes, and other provisions that can take the wind and the water.

Hearing about what works and what doesn't is one of the reasons why I enjoy coming here actually. The fifties was an amazing time when all sorts of interesting appliance designs and technology hit the market. Some good, some not so. We learn from our mistakes and our trials in life. The challenge of an inventor or an engineer is to make it better. We'd still be using gas lights if it wasn't for someone (Edison maybe?) who said I hate these things, let's make a better light!

While yes, this post does sound a bit grim, I was also posting it after I had posted on the Halloween thread. I was just thinking to myself "Those things aren't scarey, but I can think of some stuff that REALLY is!" Of course, I think we should all try a to change anything that could cause us hardship, no matter the challenge!

What scares me the most........

van full of kids
cigarette
coffee
cell phone
newpaper/ or nail polish (to be fair to both genders.)
fiddling with radio...
barefoot (illegal in most states to drive barefoot, IIRC)

AND THINKS (S)HE CAN [SAFELY] DRIVE AT THE SAME TIME. HA!

Watch how long it takes such an @$$ of the above descripion to turn a corner. Wanna bet it takes three lanes to make a turn?

Bitter in aisle one, Bitter in aisle one......LOL

What scares me:

Around here, Speed Limit 40 = Speed limit 70 and thats on surface roads, not the expressways!

How many people I see driving, talking on phones, fiddling with kids, and NOT paying attention to what they are doing.

Young people today and their sense of entitlement. They don't want to work for anything, instead they expect it handed to them.

The people in charge and making descisions, especially at the national level.

That another 9/11 type event could happen anytime, anyplace here again.
