Of my porch lions!! They have been sitting there keeping guard for the last two decades. Last night someone stole them. Must have been at least two big guys. The lions weighed over 200 lbs each,as they very old and made of cement.
What really pisses me off about this,is the fact that my mother found these lions herself. I recall how delighted she was when she showed them to me,as she knew they were just perfect for sitting on the limestone caps at the bottom of the front porch entrance. We rented a U-Haul trailer and they were brought home from Michigan via a 1977 Cadillac.
Oh! I hope they drop those lions on their toes!

Sorry about your loss.

I am positive those lions are not happy and will bring the thugs and thieves nothing but bad luck.

Now WHERE is Mrs. Kravitz when you need her?

Thats f**ked rickr

Did you file a theft report? Maybe some neighbors were aware
of people casing your place; I hope you get them back. Where in the hell do such people get the nerve to steal from
others. About fifteen years ago some knuckleheads broke into
my dads mining claim and stoled his ore car; he'd had it for at least 50 years.

Rich,

I'm so sorry to hear of the violation. I too have been the victim of a similar crime but was too young to do anything about it... BUT now I'm not!! So... my advice to you would be to contact the Antique Week publication at www.antiqueweek.com and let them know of this and send pictures. They will most likely publish the crime (they do this on a regular basis)and print the pic so that if it shows up in an antique shop or show then it can be spotted. To my knowledge MANY items have been rescued via this newspaper. Police reports do help, too.

Good luck and please let us know how you make out.

Rich

Oh, Rick!

I am sincerely and deeply sorry about this theft.

What ever happened to respect for other peoples' property?

I will keep a good thought for the safe return of these lions.

BASTARDS!

Nothing is safe anymore!

Sadly with all the home construction/renovation work going on today, people who want vintage/antique items for their homes and not willing to spend money think nothing of stealing.

Things have gone missing around our area ranging from rocks used to make up old stone walls to specially made glass panels for new metro stations. And yes, people steal things from homes, especially older home trims/decorations all the time. In fact there even was a ring going around stealing kitchen fixtures and appliances right out of newly constructed homes.

Back to your lions. Contact your local law enforcement ASAP. This may not bring back your lions right away, but you never know. Someone could get pulled over for something else on a roadway, and have two lions sitting in the back of their truck.....

For insurance and ID purposes, hope you have good photographs showing details of your lions, and that some sort of mark was engraved. This may be the only way you can prove your lions are indeed yours, should by any stroke of luck they happen to turn up. Also should you happen to see a pair of lions sitting in front of another house that you are sure are yours, you will be hard pressed to prove they are yours without some sort of identifying mark.

Again, so sorry to hear about your loss. Know how much work and time you put into your home, and how proud you are of keeping up the family homestead.

Such a shame those lions couldnt have taken a bite or two on those jerks. I hope you find them safe and sound. Nice house.
People dont care anymore about others property. I had my plates from an old car stolen in Feb and the jerks are using my plates to do robberys and the police had the nerve to call and ask me to go out and look for my plates. I guess they thought I was going to do their jobs... Chazz

If and when you decide to replace them, it would probably be a good idea to embed some rebar or 1/2" threaded rod in the base of the lions, and use a strong epoxy glue to fasten them to the porch masonry.

Motion sensitive spotlights are also a good idea.

As for police reports... I had a potted rose bush stolen from the front of my property some years ago. When I called the police, they said they wouldn't take a report since there was no breaking and entering. Since then I've had a locked chain on the tropical wood bench sitting on the front porch.

How awful!

Oh, Rick! I so very, very sorry to hear about your loss.

You must feel so violated.

I agree, please file a please report. I also agree with Rich's suggestion that you also contact www.antiqueweek.com.

What a bunch of crap!

I'm surprised Clara didn't kick there ass!

Sorry Honey! Look around town. Maybe, put in a reward notice in the paper and some one will call! That town isn't that big.

I'd be so pissed off as well.. Rick. why don't you call the local tv news or newspaper. Sounds like something they might want to use as a fill in and heck the more people that see your lions, the better a chance to get them back..

So sorry Rick! What kinda nut would do that? You never know what kind of people are out there.I would do a drive around the block cause they probly got tired of toting them and just left them lying!

Sorry to hear of this loss rickr :-(

I hate theives...and I get pissed when I hear about things like this...

Hmmm, I could put a spell on them.

I can't imagine having the balls to walk right up to someone's house and steal things---much less something as big and heavy as your lions. That really sucks, RIck. I hope the thieves are suffering from severe back problems after that heist. Karma has a way of working things out.

Beautiful, beautiful house, by the way...

sorry

I can't believe someone would go out of their way to lift and/or carry something so heavy and both of them no less, that is pathetic. Do you need to fence in the front yard to now ? Sorry for the loss Rick .........

Re: Terrible Times:

Hi! Rick, I'm so sorry to hear and see about your Lions being taken. I know what it is like from a long-past Break-In at one of my houses. They got to know my pattern of when I was home and when I was gone, daily and Robbed my house 3-times, before I was able to do enough Security later on around the house.

It is terrible having our Privacy Invaded and out Belongings taken from us, especially such items that are Sentimental and not able to be replaced, as I had many items taken of such from my house of that time.

I hope that you have good luck with getting this matter taken care of and hopefully get your Lions back.

Peace and Hugs, Steve
SactoTeddyBear...

at least the lions were not always here...

As you can see from these two photos from the 1930's and the late 1940's. Mom found the lions in the 1980's.They were not original to this house. And that is one thing that has made me realize that this could have been worse. When I think of the people that have lost everything on the gulf coast, what do I have to complain about? Not much.

The theft happened in the middle of the night,I am sure it was planned and they must have had a truck right out front. The guy across the street does landscape work on the side in the area so he will keep an eye out for them. Will contact Antiques Weekly, and send photos. I have no close ups though. The police were called, but did not come to the house. I have to call a special phone # Monday to report the theft. Have insurance of course, will call them Monday also. Do not have much hope of recovering these, however they will be replaced when I find suitable replacements.

Do not like the fact that my home was "cased" and at least two people were waiting and watching for the right moment to do this though. Makes me feel violated and a bit uneasy.

Thank you for the wonderful support, comments, and suggestions everyone. This is a wonderful community here. Too bad we can't all live together! (:

*Those are things you just don't see ANYWHERE*.

.......and to expand upon what Ben said (above)
Those are things you just don't see (JUST) ANYWHERE.

Here is a pic of lions guarding the property and welcoming one to the mid-Manhattan ("main branch") of the New York Public Library @ 42nd Street and 5th Avenue. Sorry I could not find a larger pic.

How cool is it that the set-up is VERY similar to yours! I know these were a lovely, classy and loving addition to a great stately home. My wish for you is that some-way some-how they WILL come back to you.

So sorry to hear about this

DO you happen to have a College or University nearby? That seems like a frat prank type thing to me.. it would have taken several people, just wondering if it was something they might have done. It does make you worry about someone casing the place, be sure the house and cars are locked up! Time for a big loud barking dog!

Scott

Rick, contact the local newspaper as well. Someone may have seen the crooks or pranksters and knows something. Most town newspapers would run a story asking for their return. They may have even been dumped on someone's property. At least town folks would have their eyes open. Lots of luck,
Bobby in Boston
