Speaking for my own ref shown in #6 above...
I bought it as I was quite impressed with its overall quality. I really did think it was probably an upmarket Amana.
The trim kit and acrylic panels alone set the original owner back several hundred bucks, I'm sure. I think he said they paid around $1600 for it in 1997. I got it for the princely sum of $50…and I've only replaced the condenser fan on it as soon as it came home.
No problems with interior door panels/cracks. No door alignment issues. It has a nearly-Subzero door closing feel/quality about it. Pretty nice for an Admiral! I will admit the freezer fan is on the loud-ish side, but not prohibitive to use near living room. Freezer is always reliably at -5, fridge always hold 37 degrees with no trouble.
No issues with ice buildup, defrost issues, etc. My gripe? 2 of 'em.
1) like all modern stuff, inside is way too plasticky for my taste, but that's the choice nowadays. Has been for quite a long time now. Although the Glass shelving is nice, I really like the old porcelain lined interiors and wire shelving. So my '63 Frigidaire stays!
2) Biggest gripe. The Ice dispenser. There's a crushed ice feature I love--but use it too much and the armature seems to push the bulk ice container forward toward the freezer door--causing chopping action to stop and no ice dropping. Happens after 1 or 2 glasses worth is made. Has to do with a broken stop on one of the 2 plastic guide rails/supports mounted to the side freezer wall. So I open the door, push it back in place and it's fine for a little while….It is a letdown, but nothing that would keep me from parting with the unit. And not enough to make me go online and buy a replacement, either.
It's ULTRA tidy after 20 years…not one bit of staining or discoloration inside, Love the nice brushed aluminum handles and trim--and black door gaskets/case paint. Freezer width is nice for a SxS…perfectly holds things as wide as a frozen pizza box. Unit Looks beautiful, works even better. Must admit, I am astonished to know it's a dolled up Admiral...
