Just picked up two E2's

HI All,

Fairly new member here. Just wanted to say great forums. I just picked up one Avocado E2l and a white E2LP with the raised chrome letters. The white one is in great shape and the agitator came right off and snaps back on. the Avocado has unfortunately been neglected for a long time. It's rusty and the transmission is locked. I look forward to reading through the forums and starting my refurbs.

Two nice machines to break you in. I love my E2LP after rescuing her from a decades long sleep in a barn. Pictures are always a plus around here and advice flows as freely as water thro a Filter Flo! Welcome to AW.

I'd be curious

To see the inside of the locked up transmission. Mine had a loose piece of metal in it that I suspect was hanging it up. It would run for a while, then lock up.

I read one thing early on when I was googling E2L washers about some guy that found one in a shed. The transmission was frozen solid. When he got it open, there had been water in the transmission, a fairly common problem, that had rusted solid. Water must have displaced ALL the trans oil and been there a LONG time. He couldn't free it up and even tried soaking it in Coca Cola. Having taken 2 of these apart myself, I don't see how he was NOT able to free it up. But at the end of the story, he gave up so maybe he could have but just didn't try hard enough.

These things remind me of the old VW Beetle air cooled engines. Simple but brilliant engineering, for the time, that produced something easy to work on, but were solid and with the right care could run practically forever!

I learned, if you don't give up, you'll eventually get it!

Thanks for the kind replies. E2l-arry I've been reading through your thread. Great work and that is pretty much where my avocado is. I've already removed the tub and the motor and power unit. I turned it upside down and water did run out of it frankly the cabinet has a perfect rust ring about 2 inches from the bottom. I suspect it was sitting in water at some point. We've had some flooding through the years in the area it came from. Luckily the white e2lp is pretty clean and well taken care of. It's even a world traveler her owner was in the foreign service and it's been to africa and middle east. as for vw motors my weekender is a 68 beetle with autostick transmission... people say I love pain LOL. The VW is unrestored pretty clean. Picked her up from the 94 yo female original owner with 79k on it. She swore me not to chop it up and I promised to preserve and repair as long as it owned me.

matthewbrodie, A VW Autostick? You really do like pain don't you? I wouldn't know where to even begin to look for parts, but I'm sure you're familiar with TheSamba.com. Good luck with it and the E's. I just saved one from the trash a few weeks ago in No. Georgia. Looking for a J now.
