For quite sometime, a 15 series KA dishwasher has been posted on the Des Moines craiglist. Recently I decided to shoot the owner an offer - and voila, it jumped right up in the back of the truck today! Unfortunately the tank is pretty shot, so before it is installed for permanent use in the kitchen this fall/winter, it will be receiving some 17 series upgrades.

For you KA lovers, enjoy.

Control close-up

There is something very cool about the new 15 series machines, over the previous 14 series machines. They share a very similar control panel, but the 15 boasts some more features, and a newer-styled handle that would last through the remainder of the Hobart lived machines.

With this being a factory SS unit, I believe the control treatment was then pink in color. Greg's turquoise portable has a brownish/blackish treatment.

Handle close up. Very cool handle. It physically needs to be lifted completely in order to open the door. Otherwise if you just tap it up, it won't completely open the hinge like the 17 series machines do.

New for the 15 series ~

The completely redesigned Hydrosweep! This one differs from the 17A in the basement, in that there are screws to take it apart.

Filter specific to the 15 (not sure if the 16 was like this, or like the 17)

Last shot - the model tag (and no making fun of my shorts!).

I was looking over the 17A in the basement before heading out tonight. Certainly looks like it could be done - FrankenAid it will be!

Enjoy,

Ben

Ben, I have to agree, the tub doesn't look bad. I love that stainless steel finish. Whoever had this dishwasher took pretty good care of her. How about some shots of your new cabinets?

Beautiful dishwasher Ben!! I am not into dishwashers much, but if I ever get one, it will have to be a model like this one. Very nice looking classic dishwasher!

Post Mad Men

I forgot the timer shots - very cool stuff.

(As I rubbed my fingers along the wash tub, I was getting some really nasty white film. Just like if I were to do that to a worn-down Maytag wash tub. Almost all of the blue specks are gone, and I was seeing some metal scrapes like if you were to rub a metal pan against the tub. Thankfully the door is in good shape.)

It is funny that the 906 Maytag was recently brought up, this timer works very similar. The chain drive would advance the timer to the position needed for the wash, and the advance motor on the back would advance for each increment.

Model identification.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. It really is in very good cosmetic shape, on the outside. Story goes this came from a farm house on the outskirts of Oskaloosa, IA, and was used very little. I'm not sure about the shortage on running daily loads, but she certainly kept this in very nice shape.

More to come on this machine when time draws nearer for installation.

Tank is shot?

Not to be macabre, but do you have any pics of the shot areas of the tub? I'm always curious how things fail, the plating or the welds or what not.

Is it the lip that seals around the door in front, or perhaps the air duct coming in, or perhaps it is the sump?

Ben, if it was used very little you might be able to scrub the film off of the tank & door. Don just did this on his Maytag and said it came out beautiful. I think they changed the tank & door opening considerably from the 15 to the 16 series and again in the 17's so you may be getting finding a new friend in Bon Ami!

That is a beautiful machine glad you finally got it!

Changes are too numerous to mention, but do able!

First and foremost, that machine IS gorgeous on the outside. I am getting more and more used to the stainless look on these older machines. Makes them timeless.

The washarm indicates that this was one of the earliest models they made. They went to the newer style phenolic hub without the screws soon after these came out. I dont have the dates for that change.

What model 17A do you have?

The washtank on the 15, 16 and 17 is basically the same except for these points:

Sump has non circular opening to accomodate the manifold for the Constant Rinse sprayer, so you will have to use the 17 pump. Also, the 16-17 had a different pressure switch but it will work just fine with the 15 harness.
If you have a Superba 17 then the sump heater and even the temperature controls will be a direct connect affair. They were the same until the 18's

The top racks are different in the newer machine but you can put the 15 tracks into the 17 by exchanging the hardware.
There may be a problem, however, with them being too long because the 15 has a hollowed out, for lack of a better word, inner door. The 16 and 17's moved the timers up to the top on the lower end models and so have that 4 inch indent in the door. The 16 may share the dispenser but the 17 definitely had the bimetal style dispenser so you can't use that!

You will wind up with a Frankenaid dishwasher but I can't say I haven't had a few of those conversions of my own. Did the exact same thing for my aunt..she got a KDI16 machine which also had a heater in the sump, but only 700 watts and we put all the KDS15 stuff on it, including the door! It worked fine, but took a long time to heat the water for the sani cycle.

I would run a tub cleaner in there first to see if you can get the chalk off. It MAY just be limescale and not the glaze coming apart!

Good project ahead of you and you can probably have some spare parts left too. You can use the 17 pump assy complete or even put the 15 style in there. If my memory is correct, it should work fine. But you will be able to see right away.

One last item..
The chain on the timer is connected to the Rapid Advance motor.
It took over after the rinse and hold was done and when utility/utensil was selected. It advanced the timer to the last 5 minutes of the dry segment in U/U and to off in the R/H cycles. Normal and Sani were identical cycles except for the final rinse heat in the sani cycle. The timer in the back controlled the movement of the timer. But it sure looks pristine!

Beautiful Machine Ben.

When I got the KD2-P, I used Soft Scrub and a green back 3M pad. I wet the porcelain and the sponge.Just put a few dabs of Soft Scrub on the green pad, Then with as little pressure as possible just lightly scoured. It came right back. Here's a pic of when I was done

Good news! Porcelain Enamel finish lives on!

Today I took a few minutes to have a date with some Ajax, a green scrubber, and the KDS-15, before the quest of bathroom insulation began.

I must say, I am impressed. Hiding underneath years of hard water mineral deposits, is a pristine tub. I just wish I had some photos. I would have never guessed that it would clean up - thanks everyone for urging me to give it a shot.

So - no KDS-17A tub swap needed. Just a old fashion scrub down!

Some of you have experienced these, as well as the 17/18 series machines - and some haven't. The easiest explanation of how the two differ can be related to an automobile. When you close the door of the 15 series, you feel like you are closing the door on a 1960 Cadillac. No frills, just a nice, solid glide. Move over to the 17 series, and it may as well have power steering and a landau top - the doors close just like a 1975 Coupe deVille. Very interesting how the machines of each decade mirror each other - from white goods to autos.

BTW - I have all the brochures for this thing, and the introduction repair info, but no parts books. Does anyone have any available to scan in? Thanks a bunch,

Ben

Great dishwasher Ben! What good luck that you are able to bring the shine on the porcelain back. That swap would have been a lot of work and now you can keep the machine original!

It will look great in your kitchen.

Foam Party!

~So: no KDS-17A tub-swap needed. Just an old-fashioned scrub-down!

GOOD NEWS!

Did that once and thought I had rinsed well. You may have a sudsing issue with the first load or two.

Hi Ben.

Super Machine.
I had the same brochure you posted for years. When I was a kid, I collected everything from KA. But now they're lost. You'll love that machine. Eddie. By the way, they clean great a long as you only use plates in the bottom rack.
