Fading Jeans...

I had a pair of black jeans which after several washes using 'colour' detergent, still faded.

I re-dyed them black again, using "Dylon" powdered dye in the washing machine. Umpteen washes later, the fading was noticable again; so they got another blast with the dye.

Dylon is available in the UK in various colours, including blue; and they give instructions concerning the shades of blue. Perhaps your supermarket/shops will have something similar.

The important bit to remember is that it requires a hot wash to dye-in the dye; followed by cool wash to rinse away excess dye from the article(s); followed by an empty hot machine 'maintenance wash' with detergent, to clean the machine itself (no clothes within).

ive used that RIT before. black for jeans. always on the stovetop and a double dose of dye. after the jeans had cooked the right amount of time I CAREFULLY transfered the jeans to the Maytag for rinsing. i was happy with the results.

By the time I chuck out an old pair of jeans, they are usually worn through at the pockets, crotch and leg cuffs, but there is very little difference in colour compared to the new pair that replaces them. I do try to avoid fading as much as possible, and so far my routine seems to be working well for me.

I always turn jeans inside out, and load the machine loosely so as to give them plenty of room to move around freely so they don't develop the dreaded white streaks. Using a synthetics cycle (not cottons) minimises creasing and also gives deeper rinses and reduced spins, which in turn prevents soil and detergent residues becoming trapped in the folds of the material. Warm wash, or hot if heavily soiled, and always with a colour detergent.

I finish off by drying on high heat, until the jeans are JUST dry with barely a hint of moisture left in the seams. The moment the dryer stops, I quickly remove the jeans, turn them back the right way out and fold ready for putting away. No ironing needed!

FYI

dont know if you have them in your area..but I was at Handcock Fabric on my luch hour..I noticed there was a product called "ReVive"..it said it restored color to blue jeans.

Speaking of blue jeans. Didja ever notice with Levi's that once you went from a 32 to a 34 waist size you got that awful saggy bit of extra material in the butt section LOL
Oh it was a sad sad day when I could no longer wear a 32 waist.

I know the feeling, when I was in the Air Force I was a 28 inch waist. When I got married, I quickly ballooned to a 32 inch waist (I'm 6'0").
A few years ago I was in Dillards looking at some Levi's jeans. The salesman comes up to me and we had the following exchange:

Salesman: May I help you?

me: I am looking for a size 36/34 inch jean.

Salesman: Oh, you won't find those here, you have to go to the FAT MEN'S department.

Ugh!
