As nice as those consoles LOOK, IMO, they were not easy to maintain.
The wood grain and that white/metalic strip was easily scratched and just from daily use of opening/closing the door, it would wear off. If you look at the picture above, a brand new machine supposedly, you can already see imperfections in the white/metalic strip.
And the grooves on these made it so hard to keep clean. The entire console was metal and then there is this wood grain look piece of plastic that lays over the metal which is about 3/8" thick, so it projects. Where ever you see a boundary on the plastic, its raised, so its not just a smooth surface that one can swipe with a sponge and be done. Dirt easily accumulated in those numerous grooves.
The knob is another example. The lettering is on a raised background and as such wore off easily and not uniformly.
In no time at all it had a worn and soiled appeal.
