Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Even if you don't want this dishwasher, keep staring at the timer knob. It is hypnotic. Must.....have.....dishwasher.

And it was also the model we had that after three years of use the tub rusted out dumping the water into the motor while running. At two years of age the metal strips that outline the front of the machine started to fall off.

I found one on the curb in 1985. In rough shape. Didn't last too long. Racks were really rusted. Yes, this was the model beneath the TOL electronic Lady. All steel tub, 3 level wash, yellow deluxe racks, baskets, and door seal.

Unused D&M KM DW

And this would be the best way to keep it, LOL. I already have a NEW unused 1966 LKM 240 volt D&M built DW that will get hooked up at the museum, thanks to Kevin in California, so I don't think I will go for another. By the late 1960s D&Ms already poor quality machines had declined to a point that they were truly disposable machines, I cannot even think of any DW built today that is close to being as unreliable and poorly built as a 70s D&M. The last of the D&M machines when they went to the plastic tanks did improve in quality quite a bit, but by this time they had missed the bus and WCI wisely let what was left of D&Ms go goodby, the last remnants of D&Ms did stay around longer in the 18" design.

As nice as those consoles LOOK, IMO, they were not easy to maintain.

The wood grain and that white/metalic strip was easily scratched and just from daily use of opening/closing the door, it would wear off. If you look at the picture above, a brand new machine supposedly, you can already see imperfections in the white/metalic strip.

And the grooves on these made it so hard to keep clean. The entire console was metal and then there is this wood grain look piece of plastic that lays over the metal which is about 3/8" thick, so it projects. Where ever you see a boundary on the plastic, its raised, so its not just a smooth surface that one can swipe with a sponge and be done. Dirt easily accumulated in those numerous grooves.

The knob is another example. The lettering is on a raised background and as such wore off easily and not uniformly.

In no time at all it had a worn and soiled appeal.
