Kenmore lint filter repair

The link goes to the thread when I got this last week, this thread here is for repairs.

 

I took the dryer apart 100%, NO LINT in the blower housing, tons on the motor. I cleaned the motor, lubed the drum spindle and pulleys, she's in fine shape. Sort of loud, but I'm hearing airflow lots more than motor/pulleys/belt. Timer works great, it's a very good BOL to MOL 54 year old dryer, and has a germicidal light.

 

Problem------the felt or fiber around the lint filter is shot, lots of air escaping. LOTS.  It's after the blower so won't make for even more inefficiency, but it gets the basement hot, humid, and dusty. I have and can buy various window/door insulating gasket stuff, peel and stick, but am worried about fire. I can also drill out the rivets and rebuild it with small bolts. But what material to use?

here's the basement pic. I think this is the very first washer or dryer I've bought that didn't require a single shot of Rustoleum, inside or out.

The material is just a heavy felt right? The best repair would be to remove the rivets and cut a replacement out of a suitable material. Here is a link to McMaster's selection of sheet felt:

There are a number of grades/colors, you have get to pick. Buying it in strip form by the foot is pretty inexpensive, might want to order a couple grades to get the best one.

If you do a search for rivets you might even find they have ones that will match the stock ones for a perfect restoration!

Depending on what is immediately available online, you may be able to work on the restoration of that filter when you're bored and get a new replacement to use right now. WP had filters for these available until somewhat recently, and may even still. I'll get you the part number, its 299xxx something, but they were exact FSP replacements and the last one I saw on ebay was less than $15 NIB. They have plastic handles now that closely resemble the handles used on the longer screen models from the late 1960s and early 1970s.

I will browse around and see if I can glean a part number for you without waiting until I can check my parts catalog tonight.

Just browsed before you typed, it's 299540, also known as 334940 and 236190. So far NLA, no Ebay, etc, but thanks for the heads up that it's recent. So I will keep looking. And I got pics of the replacement. I'd be happy to buy instead of repair the old one. But glad to have options, and thanks for your knowledge. Somehow, kinda, Kenmore is becoming a favorite brand for me.

I just found the same pic from one of the large online parts houses, and was gong to post it here just now, but yes, 299540, and that's exactly the part I was thinking of.

I found one online for $20-something, I'll e-mail you a link.

I have seen these on ebay, so surely one will be there again.

Looks like these went NLA in 2009.

kb0nes----thank you. For now I am buying a replacement plastic filter, but I have the original metal one and will use all your very good info for a small winter project using felt and rivets, I will be very glad to have that restored too. I would not have known where to buy felt at all.

No sweat Mark! Keep McMaster in mind for stuff like this, if you need it they likely have it. For small quantities in a hurry they are hard to beat.

When you get the chance its only fitting to restore the original filter, and it shouldn't be too difficult. Its a beautiful dryer and it deserves better then a molded plastic filter

Parts.

I know the belts for these are still available, though a bit obscure. The blower belt is round and is now clear polyurethane. Get in touch if you'd like me to order one or several
