Kenmore's in Long Island (again)

This set has been for sale a few times at least. Seller is wanting a best offer but I'm sure that would have to be at least $1,000 from what he's told me in the past. Anyways, they are nice and hopefully someone will get lucky and get a good deal on them. Neither has been used ever.

I thought these were sold last year.

I remember this set, specifically for the story behind them. They belonged to this guys grandparents, but were never used because as the story goes, his grandmother bought them unbeknownst to his grandfather, and when they were delivered, he forbade her to use them, and would not hook them up. The seller had taken over the house after they passed away, and put them on the market. As I recall the winning bid on Ebay for these was $500 last year.

I hope somebody here snatches them. If I had room for them I would in a heartbeat; they are so close to me, and even closer to where I grew up. As much as I hope a club member does buy these, why doen't the guy who is selling them just hook them up and use them? He would have better luck selling the "newer" ones that he must be using, as there is a bigger market for appliances of a more recent year, and these would last longer.

He's was not selling them for less than $1,000 several months ago when he last attempted. He had emailed me personally to offer the machines to me but I was not willing to offer near that much. He just keeps relisting them in hopes of finding someone who's willing to pay the price. Although they are not a matching set they are very nice and they deserve to be bought and taken care of by a collector. I would snag them in a heartbeat myself but I'm not willing to pay a ton of money. I have found great machines for well under $100 that are in great shape and restorable.

They are worth every penny but:

I hope he's not in a rush to sell them, because I doubt anybody would pay that much when shipping may be involved. That cost alone can be a bear as I am sure you know, and one which has prevented many a collector in this club from acquiring their dream machine.

Did they ultimately find his body hacked to pieces and stuffed into the washer and dryer with a blunt-force trauma to the head?

Nice machines, but as Jon has said $100 is my usual limit as well.

On a similar note my grandfather forbade my grandmother to replace her washer when it died. They were in a NYC apt., so the water and the hot water were included in the the rent.

He wanted the clothes dried in a dryer (at the laundromat) in that his belief was that damp clothing led to death by a number or ailments like pneumonia, etc.

His brother was of simiar mind-set and laid down similar law.

Did they find his body?

The guy said they both had passed away. Of course he did not say how, so one can only guess. Maybe a Lamb To The Slaughter? Could be, could be. Or maybe she put him through the WRINGER that he made her use! Now that would have been perfect.

Now ends the nasty portion of my post.

When I first read that story I felt sorry for the woman, however I cannot fault Husband too much. He was like quite a few men in his generation. TV characters like Ralph Kramden epitomized such men, and that philosophy of not spending money on advanced technological appliances. Also, if it had not been for the husband putting his foot down, those Kenmores would not still be brand new today, just waiting for someone to use them for the next 15 to 25 years. I really hope somebody does buy them, as they are a great set.

I agree. The price is way too high, and with a set at that age, only a collector would buy them. However collectors can easily find other great Kenmores, albeit used, but restorable for $100 as both you and Jon mentioned. The seller here is obviously trying to sell them according what a new set would cost of 2008 vintage.

Who knows? Maybe he won't be able to sell them for a few years. In that time, I should be in a much better financial position, and able to afford my own house. Then I can grab them. Now there's a goal.
