Kenwood KDW4TTSL Dishwasher

We were having a wander round currys and saw this tiny table top dishwasher. Its £120 which seems reasonable since the other table tops are twice the price.

Do you think its a good idea?

We don't have room for anything else :-(

It looks alot like the Danby models sold over here, probably comes from the same plant. The price is about right as well, they sell in Canada for about 95-105 pounds... can't make the pound sign LOL
I would say give it a go and see if you like it, hopefully that store has an easy return policy.

My friend Steve from Redditch has just been on the phone tonight about this very dishwasher....
He's had it a month and the pump went.
They are coming out to repair it but I really have doubts about the reliability if such a major part has gone after a month!!
Be careful and if necessary,(in my humble opinion,) pay the extra and go for a better known model.
How spooky is that!

What's a better known make or model? I'll hazzard a guess that this Kenwood one is probably made in China along with the rest of them like Haier, Danby etcetera etcetera etcetera. 3 etc's is the max allowed under the rules of grammar aint it?

Yeah, I'd beware of that one. We bought a cheap Proline tabletop a couple of years back, and the heater and salt indicator were both faulty from the off. Took us six months (and intervention from the credit card company) to get a refund too.

I'd suggest looking for a used Bosch tabletop. We've had one now for two years, which cost £40 used (badged as a Hotpoint Aquarius), and it's never given us any trouble. Before that we had an ancient tabletop Husqvarna Minett 2, which lasted for four years, until a leak caused the field coils to rust and disintegrate...

Thanks guys! You gave me quite a few things to think about!

In an ideal world we would have the Zanussi compact dishwasher but its a question of price. I think the Zanussi is the best in regards to the enviroment. Bosch has the better build quality.

Were going to take a gamble on the dishwasher. Its got a years guarantee on it, and its that cheap that we wouldn't be too miffed if it totally broke after a year.

Still though, i would much rather have the zanussi one :-(

sssh lol! Dont tempt them to mess about too much with the Chefs just yet til I get a brand new one to go along side my 2 vintage ones. We are getting a Stainless Steel Kenwood full size Dishwasher soon, well after Mum gets her Sebo upright and removes her mitts from my Miele cylindr and Hoover Turbopower upright. Going for the full size one with bar handle which matches our Kenwood cooker. Dunno who they are made by, to be honest dont really care lol! Means I can put MY Hotpoint dishwasher into storage to preserve it a bit til I get my own place back. Mums had the Hotpoint 18 months after saying it was an Excuse to get rid of her old Bendix dishwasher after 14 years faithful service. Hope the Kenwood does better than the Indesit we had 6 years before the Bendix but 8 years plus I expect. Them table top machines are badged up as Naiko - back in 2004 we sold these as Safeway. Seen them as Proline, Kenwood and other odd names. We had a few returned when we were Safeway, seem to be a reasonable bet if desperate I think. Good luck in deciding, hope its Not So Manic! They probably are just generic Chinese made machines then where anyone or company can fill out an order for however many they want made with whatever name they want pasted on the front and probably choose from a few different features, front doors and button layouts to semi-customize the machine and make it look slightly different from another "brand". I see lots more of that happening with all sorts of small appliances and plenty of the big names are in on it now. Karcher pressure washers and floor sweepers you can find under all sorts of different brand names is another example. Low end toasters and such as well. The big name companies save a fortune, no designing, no manufacturing, just pick from a catalog and have them shipped.

That is a generic machine sold under many brands but mainly Naiko and proline swan etc. Now generally I've found these machines fairly reliable but the clear windows fail quite early on in life and you have to replace the inner door although they sell window parts individually its impossible to reseal without leaking. Also some parts have taken 6 months to obtain once they go out of stock at the suppliers. The Zanussi table tops are well worth the price they are because they are much better. They also have a better layout inside to hold your dishes.

there are crap DONT GET IT

i got a kenwood stainless steel dishwasher, it came about 2 months ago, i used it every day, 1 wash a day at night, the circit board has just gone and currys are in the middle of repairing my dishwasher, and it over fills. go for a zanussi or bosch or even miele, my w3922 miele washer came 3 months and its great lol

well,

i very nearly bought a stainless Siemens on saturday. comet had them for £350. Wish I had now. Just the steel is a different shade to the cooker and american side by side fridge freezer. Bad enough we have a tacky silver LG Next to a white Hoover dryer in the utility room. Im kinda being put off these Kenwoods now. The cooker we have is unbelievably well built. Even the tol lux cookers have nothing on it. Thick solid hinges, heavy pan supports etc. The dials have survived 6 years of cleaning in the dishwasher without losing graphics etc. Food for thought. Dubstar, thanks for the thread. Hope this helps us both out.

Like I said earlier, we are going to buy the dishwasher. Its not that expensive and we'll replace it with a better full size one when we have the space. Well, our own home and not rental!

Can't wait to do it, just done a loado of dishes there. Ugh!

I know how that feels!!!
Our Bosch dishwasher is in storage along with our AEG washer... and I am up the wall, having to use a BOL Indesit washer and my own hands for doing the dishes lol! (We are in Hairmyres hospital accomm here in East Kilbride!!!!!)

Thanks! I hope you get your AEG and Bosch back soon! Classy machines Ah, see that used to be near me but now i'm in Ibrox. Pretty close to the Subway.

We had a BOL indesit in our last flat. Done the job but the spin speed was only 1000rpm which was crap. It never seemed to use enough water for the rinses. Now i have a BOL whirlpool. Its a noisy beast but works alot better!

I hope the Kenwood goes well too, but if it doesn't i'm not too bothered since its got a years warranty and if it goes after that its fine, it costs buttons!

I read a lot about these small dishwashers when I was moving mom into a retirement apt. It was either in the Kitchen Forum or on one of those sites like Epinions where people complained bitterly about the whole Chinese mini dw offerings. It seemed that the Haier was better than the Danby, but that is not saying much, I guess.

I have a Danby branded version of this machine - got it on Craigslist for $70. I bought it just to play with and so far, have been quite impressed with it's ability to clean. I took apart the door and removed the dark plastic cover on the window so I can see a little more of what's going on in there. I've noticed that when loaded heavily, the detergent doesn't always get flushed out of the dispenser - on the door, upper right corner when closed. Other than minding that one issue, it's performed very well. Mine has a Sani/Econo button and I really like the added heat/Sani option. I have soft water so scaling isn't an issue, but when I picked up this unit, it was very scaly and sad looking. A few runs with Glass Magic and some Dishwasher Magic cleaner and it's good as new again. I would imagine that used heavily, it probably would fail seemingly early in it's life, but then what does one expect for $120 today? (see the GM Strike thread in Super ;-)

Tabletop dishwashers & Full-size ones...

Caution is advised!!!

The tabletop machines with the window apparently do fail quite readily - they are of Chinese origin.

The Bosch tabletop model is superior by far. My grandfather had the then Hotpoint badged Bosch in 2001, which is now owned by a friend, and it is still going strong. She loves it.

The spares are readily available for Bosch models, and the exploded diagrams are availabe online.

The full-sized Kenwood dishwashers should NOT be touched with a barge-pole. Information from another forum suggests those machines are built in China and are based upon an old Indesit design. The electrics of said machines are apparently situated very close to the baseplate flood pan. Using 3in1 tablets and rinse aid liquid together, can cause an overflow of water into base: - FLASH - BANG - PUFF OF SMOKE, and it is goodbye to the dishywashy!

Spares are difficult to obtain, and there was also comment about the upper basket fittings breaking.

Go for a decent brand.
