kirby vacuum

A friend has a Kirby model 510, early 1950's, it runs, has cloth bag, burgundy handle. any ideas as to what its worth, should he spend money to update

If it works, why would he want to update a Kirby? The are basically the same now as they were then.

I would agree,

It can be polished up, a new brushroll, clean the bag a new belt and it will run like a champ.

Parts are still available, perhaps not in the original colors, but that won't effect the performance.

For todays use it would probably have to be updated to accept disposable paper bags. That model came with a cloth shake out bag. As to worth, like everything, whatever somebodies willing to pay for it. You can find them for $5 literally or a hundred.
