I have a antique dishwasher that was working fabulous untill about 1-2 weeks ago it won't drain all the way the bottom stays filled with water and none of my dishes are getting clean it leaves a gross white film on the dishes. Please help I love love love this dishwasher.

KA not draining

Have you checked to be sure the drain hose is not partially blocked?  If it is clear and there are no obstructions in the drain valve outlet or where the machine connects to the sewer the drain valve itself is not working.

If I'm not mistaken, this looks like a KDS-20. I don't know if the KDS-20 uses the same drain valve as the KDS-18, but on my 18, you can really hear the snap of the drain valve when it opens and closes. Do you remember hearing a snapping sound when your dishwasher was working and draining properly, and if so, is it still snapping like that now? If it did, and it is not now, check for a broken wire at the valve, and if the wiring is okay, check to see that the timer is sending power down to the valve.

If the dishwasher is only partially draining, are you able to empty it completely by starting a cycle, then immediately pushing the Cancel/Drain button? (Might take a couple of tries to completely empty.) If so, this indicates a blockage somewhere in the drain line, or if the line is clear, the drain impeller itself might be partially broken.

As Barcoboy said, you should hear a loud snap when that drain valve is energized. (Draining).

Pray that it is not the timer, it should be an easy fix as replacing the drain valve or something as simple as a broken wire.

Love my 18 more, but the 20 is a peach as well.

The Filter

I had the same problem with an earlier model. Wouldn't drain all the way-dishes weren't coming out clean. I pulled the wash arm out and then the filter. The filter was all clogged up. Scrubbed it in the sing and put back in the machine-problem solved.

I had this problem as well with my 21 series..

Turned out it was a kinked hose under the sink so it was a real easy fix. In my case I have an odd configuration under my sink. The good news is I have a separate trap for the dishwasher which means it doesn't drain through my disposal. The bad news is it's such an odd set up that I think when the hose gets warm over time it must have just kinked. I didn't think it was in a position where this could happen but it did. I just moved things around a bit and the problem was solved.

This actually brings up a question I was going to ask anyway. Given my odd setup I was wondering if one of those ribbed hoses would work because they seem to bend better without kinking. However, I thought I read in one of these posts that those ribbed hoses should not be used on the older Kitchen Aid Dishwashers. Am I imagining that or is it true?

Stick with the original hoses

Ralph,
If you are having a problem with the smooth hoses on your drain setup, I would recommend that you replace them with new hoses of the same type. The ribbed hoses create a large amount of resistance to the water flowing thru them and you could fins yourself with water remaining in the tub of the machine. Sometimes the drain periods are not long enough to push out all the water with the added resistance.

When we first moved to Florida and our KDS18 finally arrived with the movers from the old house, I hooked it up using the drain hose that the GE Profile was using.
It did not take long to realize that the machine was not draining properly and I figured it was because of the tee in the sink drain not letting the watrer drain fast enough. I tried the 5 gallon bucket routine and the results were the same. Water left in the tub.
I switched to the recommended 5/8" heater hose and it drained the water right out and I have never had another problem with the drain since.

The 21 series you have has somewhat longer drain periods that the machine with the drain solenoids so you may not see it if you switched but I will bet the drains after the purges in your cycles will leave more water in the sump than you have now. Those drains are shorter and may become problematic. If you still have a problem with the hoses kinking on you, you can replace the hose with 5/8" flexible copper tubing and then connect the end of it to your sink drain with a short rubber hose and do the same on the machine end.

Porper Drain Lines For KA DWs

I agree with Steve's comments, it was very important to use the proper drain hoses on KA DWs, especially on the KD-20s and earlier.

 

One of the BIGGEST service problems that KA had with their DWs was poor draining caused by undersized drain systems and overly restrictive air-gaps. KA brought a lot of these problems upon themselves because they were the only DW maker that did not supply a drain line with the purchase of a new DW, most installers tried to just use the drain line from the old DW being removed and in the case of GE DW for example they used a drain line that was too small for a KA DW. KA DWs did not come with a drain line included till the KD 24 models came out.

 

KA was loosing a ton of money on warranty calls by the early 1980s because of drainage problems and claims for damage to porcelain door liners and tanks. They also had plenty of problems with the wall ovens and cook-tops they were selling after KA bought the Chambers line. It is one of the main reasons that KA sold out to WP, the company needed much better cost controls and management for the consumer side of the business.
