I am wondering what the two holes are that are on the outer tub, by the weight ballast. I assume one is from the water valve, but what is the other hole for?  Does anyone have a service manual for an early westy? I am tring to put together a washer I obtained in pieces.

Thanks!!

The Westinghouse Laundromat Washers

My opinion is that it was used for oversudsing.Where else would the suds go?Most owners of these would use the regular soaps or cheaper detergents that were on sale. We used Dash, All, Salvo or Drive detergents but, my Aunt Nat used Tide or Ajax detergents in her Westinghouse SpaceMates Laundromat washer but used only 2 tablespoons and it never over suds (unless I made it do that by putting a handfull in somebody's pants or shirt pocket:) )That set lasted her 30 years and in 1989, she bought another White Westinghouse set in almond and still has it. had to replace the washer's filter and the dryer's igniter a few years ago but both are in pristean shape.I just spoke to her a few weeks ago and hadn't done that in 25 years. We stayed on line a few hours and heryoubngest daughter, Tracy, was on the other phone and we laughed our buts off talking about how much trubble Tracy and I wouldget into going to the local laundromats and doing the customer's wash for them. we'd ie to the owners and employees their because we were taking away their business as we washed, dried and folded the customer's clothes. They'd give us the money and we'd do it cheaper then the company did and the customers would go do their grocery shopping and we'd not only get paid for doing their wash but also for helping them load their groceries into their vehicles. Our parentys would find out sooner or later because our candies and toys we'd get at W.T.Grant and/or Toy Barn didn't just show up.

They are indeed vents! Marty, I do have a Westy Service manual for an LB-6 laundromat - it's scanned, but I would have to send it to you one page at a time... Shoot me an email if you are interested - I'll be out of email contact from Friday until Wednesday, January 4th, though!

Vent hole

If I remember right, there was a rubber hose connected to the extra hole for venting and over-sudsing. I remember how people would dump about 2 cups of detergent in these machines. Their clothes were still full of detergent after the full cycle. I once washed some bedding that I did not need to add detergent to as there was plenty left over from the last washing. They came out clean.
