Lady Kenmore Agitator hunt

My inquiry is regarding my search for an agitator my Mom's Lady Kenmore in El Paso, TX. Her drier also needs a knob.

I am in the Dallas area and realize this may be a needle-in-a-haystack situation but my Mom is really attached to her machines and I do want to give it a good try to get her washer working properly again.

I listed the equipment info below and I am attaching some pictures as well. I hope you can open them. She did find the agitator bolt locally.

The tech that went to the house to check it out said the bolt used on the agitator by some other repair guy is the wrong part and they inserted it wrong and crossed-threaded it. So it is difficult to remove. The agitator may need to be cut out! It seems to be loose and worn out on the bottom, he said. So it is not agitating the clothes at all.

Washer model: 110.72490420
Agitator part: 369645 (prob replaced by part # 285066)

Drier Model: 110.77490400 which needs the knob, part 349281, on the attached picture.

I would appreciate your assistance or any lead to a salvage dealer.

The washer of question is a 1974 model, essentially 45 years old.  New-stock parts production surely ceased some years ago.  Your search will find only used agitators of that design, or old-stock if someone, somewhere has one.

@70srule did you check to see if with your mom washer model it was possible to change the agitator for a rotoswirl would also give your mom to use a fabric sofner dispenser on top the agitator like this roto swirl or something like pic number2 or you could always look on craiglist in your mom area to see if you can find a similar model and just take the part you need?

wait....what was the year did they start using a short post in all machines, I thought it was around 1976....

otherwise, be careful on capacities and sizes of agitators.....

since there is already a PentaSwirl in there, a PentaVane or Dual Action would definitely fit....

if its not a short post, finding a large capacity any other type agitator would be rare...

as mentioned the old agitator needs to come out so we see what were working with...

Just my opinion but I would be willing to bet there is nothing wrong with the agitator itself. I would think at the machine’s age that the issue is probably inside the gear case itself. I’m sure the oil is gunned up and it’s very possible the agitate gear spring is broken not allowing the gear to engage the agitator. When the machine fills and starts to agitate if it is knocking and the agitator acts like it wants to start but doesn’t then the issue is in the gear case.

Also that agitator bolt looks to be the correct one. It’s missing the seal and the bolt is probably frozen inside the gear case shaft.

I have ping'd the Craigslist seller as well as the eBay seller and keeping my fingers crossed. I really appreciate the feedback above and the leads. When I was visiting I noticed that the agitator was loose. Not free spinning, but not tight either. I am not willing to have it cut out either. Someone just needs to take the time to properly remove that bolt then inspect the agitator and shaft to confirm the diagnosis of two techs that have gone to the house.

<blockquote>... loose and worn out on the bottom, he said.</blockquote> That diagnosis is vague.  The agitator is driven at the top and is one piece so there's nothing specific at "the bottom" of it to become loose and worn .... unless he means a problem in the transmission, as RepairGuy mentions above.

The transmission should be in neutral (gears not engaged) at the end of a complete cycle (after a spin) and the agitator should free-spin by hand.

Start the machine running in agitate, then turn it off.  The agitator should be locked (transmission in gear) against turning it by hand.  If it turns (without much effort), then either
1) The agitator is worn at the *top* where it engages the splines on the drive shaft.
2) The drive shaft splines are rusted/worn down.
3) There's a problem inside the transmission.

If 1) then replacing the agitator may fix the problem (barring any trouble with the hold-down bolt).

If 2) or 3) then replacing the agitator won't fix the problem.

NOTE:  Could also be a bad wig-wag (shift coil assembly) which engages to shift the transmission in/out of agitation.

ETA:  Ooops ... transmission shifting into agitation also controls whether the pump drains (no drain during agitate), so a bad wig-wag would cause the water to drain each time the machine tries engage agitation and then a refill would occur.  There's no mention of that being that case.[this post was last edited: 1/21/2019-20:40]

I have copied your comments and will email them to one of the techs that is waiting for me to find the part. That screw needs to come off, but he'll need another trip to the house with this additional info.

70srules you can also ask the tech to check the agitator center post to see if its rusted or need to be replace or simply cleanup

Non Agitating KM BD Washer

This is a very easy problem to diagnose, when the washer is full of water and trying to agitate is the agitator bolt moving back and forth ? If so the agitator is stripped loose from the agitator shaft and you need a new agitator.

There are many different agitators that will fit this washer.

The problem is going to be getting the bolt out of the agitator shaft [ it may have to be broken off and then drilled out and the hole in the shaft re-tapped, and the AS may be rusted in the spline area and you will need to pull the transmission to replace the agitator shaft, now you are getting into a big job.

Non Agitating KM BD Washer

Ok...I had my Sis turn on the washer and she confirmed that the bolt DOES turn back-n-forth but the Agitator does not. So I guess that is good news and we do need a replacement. Some guy that Mom called is going Sat to try to remove the bolt, but if the thread is bad in that shaft, he'll need a tap-n-die set to re-thread it. I doubt he will have that since he is a painter, not an appliance tech. I'll keep you posted, but I will probably need Gordon's agitator for sure. Thx y'all ....again.

Lady Kenmore Agitator Needed

Well,

Someone went to Mom's house and removed the screw and the old agitator. Looks like the inside part of the agitator that matches up with the shaft is stripped so I do need a replacement that is no longer manufactured. It is 17" tall. Hope I can still find one off this site.

hello 70srule if you ever need to replace your mom washer here a link to a site that sell washers with the old fashion timer knob but its in Canada montreal region so you might have to negociate with the seller to have the washer ship to your mom its a whirlpool direct drive will also include pics as well as the link also including the link to the matching dryer if you went a match set for your mom

Agitator For A 1975 LKM Washer

Hi JR, As I mentioned before you can use almost any WP-KM Belt Drive washer agitator in your Moms machine, the best replacement is the WP  Double-Duty Surglator,    But really any agitator will work that is not Bakelite.

 

If the splined area of the agitator where the agitator attaches to the agitator shaft is very rusted a new agitator may not last long, you may have to replace the transmission or at least the agitator shaft for a lasting repair, and on a washer of this age a complete rebuild is likley in order.

Lady Kenmore Agitator Needed

Thank you Pierre and Combo52. I will look for the other model agitator as well.
Mom's did come out and my sister sent me a pic of the ring that attaches inside the agitator that holds the dog ears and which fell out when the agitator was taken out (see pix attached). She believes the part that the ring is attached to inside the agitator is also broken, so a new ring and ears may not work either. I am not sure of her diagnosis.

Is the agitator bearing, it is not that important, the agitator will work without it, assuming the drive spleen is not stripped out.

 

This agitator does not have agitator dogs.
