late-model GE washers...

my local damaged freight store has a couple of damaged recent
model GE washers for sale cheap;one is a fairly plain-jane
3 knob version with the large plastic tub and a dual action
agitator-that one has some minor damage to the panel,2 missing
knobs,and a badly kinked up drain hose:$50,so i will likely
grab that one.The 2nd is a TOL one with SS tub and very fancy
panel-it has the lower left side bashed in about 3-4",and a few
scratches;$150 for that one,said"hydrowash"on the panel.
I have heard these don't have the best reputation,but are they
decent enough to get and fix at that price?Also does the TOL
one have an inverter driven motor?

I've had a 2007 GE Hydrowave with agitator that has been great since it was new. It cleans very well, and works like new.

bought one...

got the $50 lower end one-popped the front panel off and was
shocked to find a 3-phase inverter driven motor and no
transmission!!-looks like there is a magnetic clutch to unlock
the tub from the agitator and then the motor reverses to
provide agitation directly through the belt drive-motor pulley
is less than 1"diameter while tub pulley looked to be around
11"dia.the drain pump is a wet rotor"magnetic"type.
washer is very light-possibly around 150LB lol.
will give it a try soon...

I junked one similar to the you bought for $50 because of a bad timer. It had the inverter motor as well, with SS clothes basket.

Its so cool that electronics now take the place of Steel hardened gears. I hope its fun the use for a while and you def. got a good buy. About 150 lbs. for the whole machine, Wow. I must of been goofy as a teenager in the 1970's, after we got new Kenmores, the following year the dual action came out. I was naive enough to believe we would see great things in the future. alr2903

Frankly for real long term reliability and life I will take the steel gears-there are some mechanisms using "gears" that have been in use for 50years or more-can electronic systems last that long----????Yes many of these electronically controlled machines are now languising in the landfill-there mechanical ones are STILL GOING!!!

tested it

finally got around to testing the GE-works great,no repairs
needed other than the mangled drain hose.It has a nice long
stroke and agressive wash action,some of that wash action
against the deep ribbed plastic washtub-seemed to be quite
effective at getting the dirt out.
Though not high on my faves list,if these are reliable,seem
to be a pretty decent washer(i got a REAL good deal on mine!)
One little trace of the filter flo era remains;a cinderblock
motor counterweight...
BTW it's a 2009.
