I picked up this Hoover Convertible Deluxe the other day at a local thrift store. I could hear it whimpering as soon as I walked through the door. I walked over to it and couldn't resist taking it home. So in the back seat it went to its forever home. The poor thing was filthy and had wire and threads wrapped around the impeller shaft. I'm sure that's probably why it ended up there. Here are the before pics:

Nice! It's amazing how many vacuums end up at the thrift store because people aren't willing to just take a look at them. We scored a Concept One and a Dial-a-Matic this way. Someone had vacuumed an eyeglass lens with the Concept One, which caused it to clog. A 2 minute repair returned it to its properly functioning self!

The Dial-a-Matic was given to us for free because, and I quote, "It's the ugliest orange vacuum we've ever seen and we hate it." The thing is self-propelled in both directions! The only thing it needed was a new belt, which is why it came our way.

How did you clean yours up so nice?

That is a lovely 1070.
Aside from the dirt and furniture scuffs that was in nice shape, especially the painted base and the lens which is usually warped or burned due to too large of a bulb being used.

Stephanie-
You've done another great job in bringing back something to all it's glory.

It's really surprising how simple the concept of an upright works. Provided you don't abuse that, the vacuum will last for years. But there's always the fools that say, "It doesn't clean anymore, or it doesn't have good suction." And when you tell them to wait a sec and look inside...THE ADVENTURE BEGINS!

Woman I use to work with had that problem on a Hoover Concept One upright. She told me she use to vacuum the leaves and twigs off her indoor outdoor rug on the patio. I thought God what will I find in here. Took off the baseplate and found one of her husbands dress socks in it. (picked it up evidently under the bed) By the time I got that sock out it was a full length stocking all wrapped in leaves and twigs. She got severely teased at work about that one. Everyone had a good laugh as well as her.

People just don't realize vacuums are meant for sucking up dust, lint, and fine particles or debris out of carpeting, upholstery and such. Not twigs, branches, leaves, paperclips, coins, or YOUR HUSBANDS HOSIERY!!!! LMAO

Anyhow Stephanie, you now have another trophy to place with the rest of your collectibles that you can surely be proud of. CONGRATULATIONS!

Rick

Have A NOS package of belts

Which one believes are for Hoover Convertible vacuums. Purchased thinking they would work with another but they don't so are surplus to requirements. If you want them send me a message. Have no use as don't plan on adding another vacuum to my collection (have three) plus two hand vacs.

Congratulations on saving this Hoover.

I have a Concept One which I rescued from the kerbside collection while driving through Toorak, one of the toffiest suburbs of Melbourne. It is my "upstairs vac." It does a seriously good job of grooming our wool carpet. I had a more basic Concept One before that, scrounged from I forget where, but the Toorak one has power drive and retractable cord, which the earlier one didn't.

The belt for the power drive was worn out, I chased up a new one but it seems incredibly tight and hard to fit. I have checked and double checked, it IS the correct belt. How tight a stretch should the power drive belt be? It seems like "bearing abuse" to me.

Upstairs vac - we only have fitted carpets upstairs. We have terracotta tiles downstairs. (very muddy environment.) So we have two indoor vacs - the Hoover Concept One upstairs, and a Electrolux Solamatic (1970s barrel vac) downstairs. I love the Solamatic because we have a solar powered house, so it sounds appropriate. And it only uses 700 watts but enthusiastically slurps up our cat hair...

Great find and super job cleaning it up!Great vacuums-The Hoover Convertibles are workhorses-and LAST!!!!Many years left in that one.BETTER than those other vacs sorrounding it!Now if I could find some others at yard sales!Could I be lucky today on the way home from work?Certainly needed the "anti-twining device" on the fan shaft-would think the other user would have HEARD the commotion!Fan is in remarkable shape-no nicks or breaks!

Stephanie,

The cleanup job you did on it is so good you should show it off over on the Vacuumland site too.
