Normally I stick to electric ranges, but saw this clean gas Crown stove heading for the scrap heap and thought I'd take it home. A label on the back says, "Crown Stove Works, Chicago, IL" and the date of manufacture is November 11, 1975.

The clock doesn't seem to work. Does anyone know of a place that repairs electric stove clocks?

Looks like we'll be cookin' with gas!

Double the Fun

My friend Marilyn has a Crown 40 inch with double ovens.  When the trend in electrics was to have two ovens, one large and one useless, Crown provided a niche by still making two standard sized ovens which can crank out a ton of food.

Celeste Holm has

one of those 40 inch Crown ranges, and I think it has 6 or 8 burners. (Or she did, she must be elderly if she's still alive.)

I cooked on one once, and it was wonderful. (Not Miss Holm's, however.)

Nice catch, Kevin!

Thank you!

I am glad Miss Holm is still alive. She has been a favourite character actress of mine for some time.

Wow . . .

I was just looking at the 40" version of that range earlier tonight. I was doing some small architectural consulting to an older woman as a favor for a mutual friend. I wandered into the kitchen and saw the Crown with double ovens and six burners on top. It's harvest gold, and when I commented that it looked to be a wonderful range from the late '60s the owner said she bought it shortly after moving into her house in '68. She also mentioned that she bought it for the double ovens, and has done some repairs during the years to keep it in top shape. She isn't looking to redo her kitchen and happily expects to own the Crown for the rest of her life.

Thanks for the scans! Those were great to read.

I can't tell if the knobs on the stove are originals or not - I'll have to do some research. They all match, but could have been replaced. Judging by the overall condition of the stove, I don't think it was used much. It would be odd that the knobs broke or wore out, but people do crazy things with their appliances sometimes!
