I hope Launderess sees this thread, its nice to be loved!
Couldn't threads stay active for a fixed amount of time rather than falling into the archive if about 100 other threads get newer posts (which happens quickly in the Imperial section)?
Quite a few times, I couldn't make a followup on a thread that had been archived too quickly (in my opinion). I don't blame other posters for that. Having many threads and many posts is what make an active forum. Would it be possible to keep threads active for a few months after their last post? I often wish I could reply to an old (and even just a two weeks old) thread but there's no reply box anymore.
On other forums that don't archive their threads, I often resurrected very old (I mean years old!) threads and I don't think it caused any problems! Sometimes, on forums with email notification, it also stimulates occasional posters to look back at the forum they haven't visited for a while as they get a notification by email. It also allows posting all the information about something in the same thread instead of creating multiple separate threads about the same thing.
Also a bit out of the subject but I never figured how (or if there's a way?) to get email notifications for replies to threads we posted in. That's a feature I really like when it's available. Also, (and this is completely out of the subject but I won't create a thread for that!). How do people quote other's comments in red text over their avatar? I was never able to do it. I did try to use the "Blockquote" in the editing bar but that doesn't seem to work for me.
Hi Phil, good comments. I didn't see that original thread until just now, my adorable husband still slaving away at work just sent me a text with the thread number that you all are referring to. OK now I get it, lol.
You make some good points on possible features. The email notification feature would be the easiest for me to write of all of your suggestions. The not falling off for two months bit would make the index list huge and google penalizes sites for having too many links on one page so that wouldn't be ideal. I think I could also look into making threads be reserected, that probably would be more complicated than the email feature, but it would be a better solution than having 300 links on one page. Food for thought for me.
So number one and number three are certainly near-term possibilities. Years ago I liked threads that fell of the list if they were controversial, it was a relief to see them gone. These days automaticwasher.org generally so calm and polite (compared to most other forums I see) that it really isn't an issue and I can always close the worst of them.
Any other wish list requests will I'm feeling programmy?
