Thanks, Everyone!

You good folks are a wealth of knowledge. So, in a nutshell, is this Roma stuff worth using regularly, or is there a better product people recommend. Keep in mind, I'm cheap and don't spend a lot of money on detergent. What is the opinion on Zote? Is it anywhere near as good as Fels-Naptha? It sure looks pertty pink! Comments?

If they sell Roma, then they should also be selling Foca (by the same manufacturer). I like Foca better, as Roma is way too sudsy since it is used more as an all-purpose cleaner in Mexico. Zote is gummy and I've had problems getting it to dissolve in anything but the hottest water. Viva is the best, and really like Lirio, if you can find it.

Isn't Zote used as a bar to pre-spot stains like ring around the collar and poo-poo undies? I guessed it was the equivalent of Fels-Naptha. Foca and Roma seemed the same to me. Are the ingredients different?

Zote is a phosphate containing Mexican soap sold for laundry use, though one could probably use it for other housecleaning chores as well. Zote does not contain Naptha,Stoddard Solvent or any other stain removing agents like Fels.

Again, laundering by hand either in a wash tub or stream is still widely enough done in Mexico and South America to warrant soaps like Zote's being very common sellers.

FWIW Zote is also sold and used by fishermen in North America as bait. IIRC trout in particular are attracted to Zote, have absolutely no idea why.

detergents

I have discovered that here in Lynn there are a multitude of hispanic grocery stores and they sell Ace, Ariel, Omo along with Kmarts Foca and Roma and Ariel. There was a grocer in Peabody that sold Brazilian Omo that I loved and of course wouldnt ya know they moved or went out of business on moi.So basically I can find mostly anything that I want here. Even the Chinese Tide that I think stinks and suds up like mad.
When I lived in IL I went to a Japanese store called Yoahan in Arlington Heights and they sold a wonderful detergent there called Attack!...I miss that stuff. It was very compact and very powerful for a small scoop of the stuff. One detergent that I do miss is Wisk PowerScoop...gawd I wish it would come back.

I have a bar of pink Zote here, had it for a couple of years now. The labeling lists the ingredients as: Sodum tallowate, sodium cocoate, fragrance, optical brightener and dye. It does state that it is a "Pink laundry soap with a minimum fatty acid content of (66%)". It's odd that there is no mention of phosphates.

Here in Tucson, we have Viva, Foca, and Roma. Viva has the nicest scent. But all of them make suds cake if too much is used. I find that any of the Mexican detergents clean better than Tide. I have even washed clothes in Tide, then re-washed in a Mexican detergent only to be amazed at the dirt coming out that Tide left behind.

As for the phosphate issue, with all the pollution from cars and all other things we use, I don't see the big deal about phosphates. Just some eco-bolsheviks with too much time on their hands so they think up this nonsense about pollution.

Omo is Australia's answer to Persil

Hi Guys,

In AU Omo is the sister product to Persil NZ. Persil isnt available in AU.

Omomatic was the first FL formulation with low sudsing and it's been around since the early 80's. I'm not a big fan of omomatic it tends to over suds easily, regardless of the amount you use.

I use Radiant Matic which is another Unilever product.

If one goes to dollardays.com, they advertise an all-purpose soap by Colgate called Octagon. It comes in bar form, so I'm thinking it may be similar to ZOTE.

Octagon soap is horrible, IMHO, though it has been around for 50 years or so. Nothing like Fels at t'all.

Once bought a bar because our local shop was out of Fels. Octagon is very "wet" compared to Fels and didn't clean as well. Of course Octagon does not contain Stoddard solvent or Napthalene, so that could be the reason why.

I stopped at my local tienda today to finally check out what laundry products they had in stock. While there I saw Axion on the shelf, but this stuff looked like it is for dishes. Is this what Axion is for now, or can it be used in the laundry too? Please share your wisdom with me.
