Just got a compliment on linguistinc abliltiy in another thread. Thank you kind soul!

I wanted to start a new thread on this topic.

I'm left handed! [*SIGH* GREAT another 10% minority!]

and besides being "sinister" in Latin and "gauche" (awkward/clumsy) in French I am also "aristeros" (Greek) first-rate/exceptional [Like in school the "Arista" club/honor.]

Apparently this way-of being is credited with:

1) creative genius <blush>
2) linguistic ability
3) reasoning/ logic
4) comic ability (there are many more left-handed comics than there statistically "should" be)

We also remember the melody of a songmore clearly. Righties remember the words "better".

I'd be curious to hear from other lefties, and what else is known about this "condition" HA!

At least they don't burn us at the stake anymore!

Lefty here as well...

....now, about those left-handed products....

I've spent 41 years adapting to a right-handed world -- and now I'm supposed to change?!?!?!?

Another comment

Didn't see the other information so I thought I'd comment.

As for remembering melodies better than lyrics to songs, that's me. My "creative genius" and "reasoning/logic" are OK I guess, LOL.

Linguistic ability? I've become pretty much fluent in Spanish after only 2 years (and know both Mexico and Spain verb conjugations which do differ...), and can speak it clearly and with the "accent". Never once thought I'd learn a language that quickly and with as much enthusiasm as I did/do; will definitely try other languages in college. ¿Quizá sea una capacidad fuerte de un zurdo? (Perhaps it's a strong ability of a lefty?)

Could be a lefty or righty.....

Does being ambidexterous count? I can and do use both hands. I think that I am one of those people whose mom forced them to be right-handed. Makes multi-tasking that much easier!

Bassakwards!

Im right handed but I worked in a store for a guy that was a lefty, and had everything set up for himself. So over a 10yr period I learned to stock shelves and use adding machines and other office equip lefthanded, Part of my current job is setting metal stamps and as a result of this I can read backwards.(actually I do a lot of things backwards,Ha!)

Me too!

I'm a lefty. But I function quite well in a right handed world. (Case in point, I was on vacation when the carpal tunnel prevention devices were installed at work. My boss thought that he was doing me a favor and had mine set up for left handed use. (I.E., the mouse was on the left instead of the right.) I couldn't function that way and they had to reinstall everything (and incur additional expenses). Let's just say that both Office Services and my boss were NOT happy campers! They eventually got over it.)

Center dial Maytags, anyone?

I'm a righty, training myself to be ambi. It's not easy.

I was using a friend's Sunbeam Le Chef food processor a while back, and that work bowl mounts on to the base with a left thread, unlike Cuisinart's right thread. I eventually "got it," but it was momentarily frustrating. That is why I decided to try going ambidextrous at this late date.

Right handed world

English is funky too..

right hand.. "correct" hand
left hand .."remaining" hand.

What scares me the most is that righties sometimes ask me which way to loosen/tighten threaded screws etc. HEY WAKE-up!!! LOL It was made for YOU!!

Mom & dad would freak-out at how "clumsy" I was in a workshop with right handed(the de-facto default) tools and ditto kitchen tools.

(NO mom, really if it bothers you... don't watch me using the knife in my left hand.)

Would you believe no-one could teach me to tie my shoes with the left hand? They themselves could not do it leftie (so dont excpect me to do it rightie!) and to this day I make two loops and knot them.

(paint-on, paint off... with Scott Baio.. What movies was that in?)

Right-Tighty
Left- Loosey

The natural motion of the right hand is clockwise.
the natural motion of the left hand is counter-clockwise.

Most things tighten clockwise. (do I hear someone chuckling in the background?) Except:

1) NYC fire-hydrants where clockwise is "On"
2) Gas stoves -top burner knobs. This is a handly little device to save you (majority-- righties) from yourselves. The natural clockwise motion of the right hand turns this to "off", and used to be exclusively towards a lower flame. Clockwise is still always "off".

1)Timers move clockwise, for a rightie. If they are not in the center of an appliance, they are on the right side, usually.
2)Key-wound clocks are wound clockwise (and have to be done with the right hand.)
3)spiral notbooks are impossible.
4)cook-top control are usually on the right side.
5)Cameras must be held with the right hand and the shutter trigger engaged witht the right hand as well.
6) Anyone *SIGH* old enough for a dial-type phone? try THAT leftie. HA!
6) Power tools. Do you know that tiny cylindrical button that is a lock to keep the "ON-OFF" finger-trigger locked in the "ON" position. ONE guess what happens with the left hand. It gets pressed in AUTOMATICALLY (without meaning to)and I would have to fret about stopping the power tool. We won't even discuss how a portable electric circular saw is IMPOSSIBLE to navigate left-handed.

7) With which hand do you have to start your car?

forced to be a rightie

Hi Venus!

I think more than moms and nuns are forcing us to convert.

[I thought of a switch (your waiting switch) and there was the nun in my head. LOL]

I think we lefties are more aware of the awkward and un-intuitive "fit" of ordinary products to our use and approach them knowing the right hand works best...

It takes me years to train folks as to where I have to sit at the table... being the left side or the ends otherwise.. "your" right hand and "my" left hand will battle for space and get territorial.

Burning at the stake

Did I stupidly say "At least they don't burn us at the stake anymore" ?

OMG...OMG..OMG here is a controversial site.
I won't even add this as a link.

http://www.narth.com/docs/lefthand.html
The explosive infected pimple who wrote this sounds like a real blast.

Based on the meaning to the name NARTH and the word "paradise" in the author's E-mail address, this reeks of unbiased scientific reporting, eh?
NOT---- does the word "AGENDA" perhaps fit.

OMG!!

Living well is the BEST revenge

What can I say PeteK?

Living well is the BEST revenge, and if the frustraion of dealing with a rightie world takes us out quicker, then

C'est la via et C'est la guerre.
That's life and that's war!!

Joke 'em if they can't take a f......

Are you in your right-mind?

Well technically "YES" Bob, we lefties are the only people in our right minds... but since when is being in one's right mind of any comfort?

..and.. HEY speak for yourself.. LOL LOL LOL

VEG..tell them please, am I in my right mind? LOL LOL LOL

left handed tools/implements

John:

Left-handed tools and implements are impossible to re-master.
YUCK. Leftie scissors? Everyone should try it at least once..keep away from other body parts!

Dont' change!! LOL

Re: Front-Opening Small Car:

Hey! Pete, what Brand of Car is that? Our Neighborhood Barber Shop Owner had one of those, but it was either Blue or Yellow, but I never for whatever reason ever saw or knew what Brand it was Manufactured as...

What a "Cutie-Patooty" Car it is, it would certainly get the "Looks" when Driving it around Town. Did they actually go fast enough to be able to go on Freeways/Highways?

"BTW" is that yours, or just a Photo "FYI" to show everyone, talking about things for Leftie's???

Peace and Happy Motoring, Steve

Hey JDINSTL...you an I have a couple of things in common

John,
Not only am I left handed like you but I was born on Linclons birthday as well. As for the whole left handed thing I look at it this way, we lefties are the Steven Spielbergs and the Picaso's or Beethovens of the world while the righties are the Bill Gates and the Lee Iacoca's of the worlds.

leftie too!

Hey guys, I'm a leftie too! Funny thing is that my brother (my only sibling) is a leftie too, and I guess that is why we butt heads every so often, and have all our lives! I don't know what my mother did while pregnant to create this! Ya gotta learn to adapt!
