A long time tradition at Memorial Day has been Rice Krispie Treats. A confection that I would prefer to prepare at home rather than purchase the ready to eat offerings. And I always increase the marshmallow to cereal ratio.

Anyone else love 'em?

Anyone ever make them with different varieties of cereal?

Add additional items? Chocolate chips perhaps? Or frosted with an icing?

Share your ideas, please.

An all-time favourite of mine!

Wow, I thought I was the only one who used more marshmallows!   It makes them much better I think...

I've added chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and peanut butter chips to make them more delicious, but the regular 'as-is' version are still tough to beat.

I've noticed in a couple of 50s cookbooks recipes for 'Tutti-Frutti Squares' - it's the basic Rice Krispie recipe with the addition of 1/4 cup of chopped candied cherries and 1/4 of walnuts.   I've got to try that one day...

When I was a brat, I remember making batches for myself and not sharing them with the older sibling.   I also remember using a rubbermaid spatula to melt down the marshmallows (only did it once!).  When I realized the spatula had also melted,  I still made up the batch, but I was eager to share that one with my older brother... LOL

Variations

I was instructed to use Lucky Charm's Cereal as a substitute. Divide the marshmallows from the cereal from the cereal itself. Press the charmed marshmallows on the top of the treats in the pan.

I will need to try them soon...

I used to like them more,

when I was a child in age, than as a child in mind....

An added 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla added to the butter/marshmallow mixture does something very helpful.

They are good. Have also had some variations with different types of crispy cereals (cocoa Crispies, Fruity Pebbles...I'm sure there's others), with choc. chips, or butterscotch, or p.b.chips) plus drizzling with chocolate, or caramel, or butterscotch.

That candied cherry version also sounds tempting....

Hell, let's face it....they're all good!

I like Special K treats.  melt the marshmallows as usual and when melted add 1 cup of creamy peanut butter then pour over 10 cups of Special K.  My kids loved it.  My mom did the same only she melted a bag of butter scotch chips then added the peanut butter.  Makes a harder cookie.

I bet Coco Crisp would be good instead of the Special K

Another variation

My mother would put chocolate chips in them, and then melt buttersscotch chips, and pour over the top, and then let it cool. The Bomb!It was also good in reverse!

Frosting

I have taken a ready made tub of frosting and microwaved it till hot, then poured it over brownies before, see no reason it wouldn't work here either.

Always make them on July 4th and take to our local parade. Same group always gets together and everyone brings a dish.

Like Lawrence I always add vanilla. A full teaspoon though rather than 1/2. I always add more vanilla than any recipie calls for. Ive made them with strawberry flavored marshmallows. Came out good. Ive also made them and added 1/4 cup of smooth peanut butter. Also good. Ive never used more marshmallows than called for but that sounds good.

These are my favorite Krispies treats recipes---one of which uses marshmallow Fluff.

Aside: I use an app called Pepperplate to import and store recipes on my iPad. You can simply copy/paste recipes from about 30 supported sites (AllRecipes, Food Network, Food.com, and Taste Of Home to name a few) into Pepperplate. No need to type the recipe in manually. You can, of course, manually enter your favorite recipes from cookbooks, etc.

For some reason, puffed rice does not appear to be available in eastern Europe. I did look at making my own but it sounds to be beyond the limitations of normal domestic cooking equipment. I did bring a carton back with me last time I went to UK by car. There are a few packets left so I might have a go at making these.

Wondering...

If anyone has ever made them with home made marshmallow. I imagine they would be that much better!

banned in childhood

My father is a dentist, and most cookies/cakes/Rice Krispies treats were banned at home, except perhaps once a week at Sunday dinner. We had a dozen fruit trees in the yard, so dessert if there was one at all usually consisted of fruit.

The only times I ever got to sample Rice Krispies treats as a kid was when I accompanied a Mormon friend to the Friday Movie Nights at his church. For 10 cents you watched a triple-G-rate Disney film, sat on a sleeping bag on the floor, and there was punch and either Rice Krispies Treats or popcorn balls for snacks.

My parents were nonsmokers, drank coffee only when entertaining (after-dinner coffee) and maybe had one glass of wine a month (alcohol was set out mainly when entertaining), which were simply their lifestyle preferences----not religion-driven. As such, I could see very few differences between my Mormon friend's family and my own---except that Mormons seemed very permissive of junk food.

(for clarification: my friend's family was not very hard-core Mormon. Parents were not married in a temple, my friend did not serve a mission and now is non-practicing).

Ugh, reading this thread was painful! I looove Rice Krispie treats but I'm a gestational diabetic at the moment so they are forbidden :-(
A few more weeks though and I'll be all over these recipes you guys have posted!
