Gosh, i remember when "Making Love" was at the theatre, str8 people got up and walked out for the first kiss. It was another movie that did not put gay's in the "mainstream", but played to cruise bar meetings. Ms Kate Jackson, Harry Hamlin, Michael Ontkean. But Ms Kate, did have a Rolex. ahhh the 80's.

Another vote for Sordid Lives

It played for 2 years here at the same theatre. For vintage fun The Ritz is very good.

"maybe I should try fantasizing about a more masculine woman like Jane Hathaway"...Leslie Jordan as Brother Boy

Nope. 10 minutes into it my partner mumbled something about "less sheep, more cowbell" and fell asleep a few minutes later.

Annie Proulx's original short story was very short, much better than the film IMO.

If I may be so bold ...

I was brought up in gay culture (my brother came out when I was very young), and would like to chime in, if I may.

Totally second "Torch Song Trilogy", and "Sordid Lives".

Also, did anyone see "Girls Will be Girls"? I love, love, LOVE that movie! Very, very campy, and some flawless performances by some wonderfully talented female impersonators imho.

I saw "Another Gay Movie", and while it was cute, for me it quickly degenerated into "just another addition to the spoof movie genre". My brother thought it hilarous. <shrug>

"Cabaret" is a must-have for anyone - lbgt or otherwise.

"Parting Glances" was a good movie for it's era. It was one of the first films in the 80's to tackle the AIDS pandemic. I don't know how relevant it would be for a young man these days (or if the movie can still be found), except to know how far we have come.

Of course there's "Mommy Dearest" and "Whatever Happened to Baby Jayne" and all the rest of those.

And finally, I will always have a special place in my heart for anything John Waters.

Again, this is all just my humble opinion, and only a few of my faves. They were presented to me over the years as "must sees" by my brother, his friends, and my friends. I may think of more....

-Sherri (checking the lists of others to see if there are any mentioned I haven't seen)

Pedro Almodovar of Spain.
Not necessarily LGBT, but still a must-have!

I was thinking of one of his drag-queens "letal" (lethal) when someone posted a pic of a "choloate delight" in another thread. And another scene where the pesky new reporter had on a fashion-forward outfit with headlights strategically placed over her *COUGH* headlights.

> Pedro Almodovar of Spain.

Heh, ever see "Law of Desire"? It's your first and only chance to see a young (and almost supernaturally handsome) Antonio Banderas with his ankles in the air.

1987

I thought Prick Up Your Ears was very well done. Pretty sad, but, to me, seemed like a serious flick. I'm not exactly an LGBT fan - more of a movie buff.

Here's one of my favorite scenes from Trick, where Gabe gets his first taste of a gay nightclub. Doesn't take him long to get the hang of it. :-)

we saw a few years ago

Maurice, 1987 amazing cinema with early Hugh Grant
Crusing, 1980 great movie! with Al Pacino and Paul Sorvino
Sweetie, 1989 whoa ~ early film by Jane Champion
Heavenly Creatures, 1994 Kate Winslett, directed by Peter Jackson - Thanksgiving dinner was late one year while I watched this movie.
The Crying Game, 1992 a classic must
Frida, 2002 Loved it
Longtime Companion 1990, seeking a voice for AIDS

Sweetie sounds a bit like The Hanging Garden... A gay son, alcoholic father, a disturbed mother, a grandmother with end-stage Alzheimers (the family keeps her locked up), even their dog is almost blind and constantly walking into walls and tables.

It's one of a very few films I can't bring myself to watch a second time. The writer's intent was to create something that defies all attempts at categorization, and he succeeded IMO. I'd call it something between comedy and horror.

'Head On!'

An Aussie movie that came out in '98. The main character is played by a local actor named Alex Dimitriades, who is straight (surprise, surprise), but acts out his role exceptionally well. This fella is very easy on the eye and the stroy line is ace. Very gritty ozzie drama. Check the linky for the trailer and a few other bits and pieces.
