Lint question

I recently opened a multi layer diaper (ripped the seams open) to investigate the lumps (felt like bits of clay type kitty litter from the outside) that had formed in that one plus others like it. The one I opened also had the outer layers "disintegrating". What I found inside looks like lint and lint pills but feels very hard and rough. Putting my hand between the layers seriously felt like putting my hand into a sandy jeans pocket. What could possibly have gotten in there to cause this?

That is probably the polymer material that absorbs water and turns to gel--just add hot water and stir.

Cloth diapers

Sorry, I forget that there are diapers made out of polymers and wood pulp/paper and whatever else they put in disposable diapers since I haven't bought any of them in about 15 years.

The diapers in question are made out of cotton with a trace of polyester, elastic, and plastic/resin snaps.
