In Harvest Gold. These belonged to a friends parents, and they were purchased as a set in 1972 according to my friend.

And the dryer

The dryer model # starts out with 110.72-------
The washer model # starts out with 110.71------

These are NOT a matched set, although they were purchased at the same time. The parents died over 10 years ago,so why the set is mismatched remains a mystery. My friend told me his parents bought the set when they moved into the home (where he now lives) in 1972. Do you suppose they got a deep discount on the washer because it was "last years" model??
It is kind of too bad,as they are very close,in every way, except for the control panels. At least both panels are lighted, and are similiar.

So we have lots of rust stains in the white tub.

Matched sets are kewl!!

Great idea Austin! But not for me however. These are too new for my taste. The washer and dryer both need work also. The dryer (which is GAS by the way) runs and gets hot,but the drum does NOT turn. Sounds like a belt to me.

The washer runs and does NOT leak, however the timer must be advanced manually. Sound like a timer motor to me.

My friend Ralph can't throw anything away.(please note the basement) He thought perhaps I would want these to restore, and I don't. If I take these I would give Ralph $50.00 and scrap the dryer and part out the washer.Hate to do that if these could be saved. Would anyone out there want these for $50.00??

Very cool! The match to the pictured dryer is an "alphabet" washer with a Variflex agitator, it was the top of the line save for the one with all the pushbuttons and locking dial. Its equal from the year before (1971) had the indicator window above, rather than to the side, of the knob.

Did 800s always have the detergent dispenser?

Rick, the best thing I've found to remove well water rust like that on porcelain is ZUD powdered cleanser. If it's plastic forget it, getting those rust stains out is nearly hopeless. Thats how my dishwasher looked after only a few months till I got a SS model.

Scott, thanks for explaining the match to the dryer, that was the first thing I thought of when I saw that dryer. Yes, this particular "version" of the Kenmore 800 had the detergent dispenser. I think this style came about in 1969--there was a morphing of the machine in 1972 or so that didn't have the chrome handle on the lid, just the new kind that had the "cut" on the door lip that provided an "opening" for obne to grab and pull open the lid--like all future Kenmores. The other thing was the "gold" part of the panel took on a more "silver" look and the water temp & level knobs had their little plastic faces removed and the characters were imprinted on the panel and those knobs were similar (the handle you grasped to turn) had pointers on them. But the timer dial retained the plastic ring around it. This last morph also had more sound insulation and was much quieter.

Iron stains on plastic tubs

are most easily removed with citric acid which is most easily purchased as Fruit Fresh. It should also work on porcelain, but do not let a really concentrated solution of it remain in contact for very long because it will etch the top glass layer of the porcelain.

Tang

I always heard if you put a measuring cup of Tang orange drink, you know, the stuff astronauts are made of...in the bottom of your dishwasher and run the cycle it's supposed to disolve hard water build up and rust stains. Guess it's the citric acid in it.

That's pretty much all I can say whenever a Kenmore 800 shows up. It's like Robert seeing an Apex, but I can't afford the shipping on either the washer or the dryer. It's wonderful that this one doesn't leak and it works. the timer is not a deal breaker. The ebay Kenmore800 dryer is awesome. It's the perfect match for sure. I just wish I had the $$$ and the space to store the machines, or my own place where I can use them.
