Hows it going guys? Just purchased a 1949 L&H Automatic Electric Range Model 8840-1 and am having a heck of a time finding any information on it at all. Ive found a few advertisements but thats about the extent of the info out there on them.

I am hoping to find a copy of a schematic as the one on my stove is not 100% readable. Also, Anyone have a copy of an owners manual or anything at all describing operation?

Is L&H a fairly common brand to come across or is this an oddball? Any parts sources for these ranges?

Its in really nice original condition, must have been in a cabin somewhere here in CO as its barely used. The wiring within it is in excellent condition but I am going to rewire it anyways. It even still has the Deep well pot with it!

Any advice or info would be great!

Lindemann & Hoverson

L&H later became Thermador. In earlier decades of the 20th Century, they also sold ranges under the name Lectro Host. They were located in Milwaukee or someplace near the iron mines of Minnesota. Their ranges were heavy and well built like Monarch Ranges and among the first to use the little clockwork mechanism to provide infinite heats for the surface units.

Neat old range but not one of the more popular brands that's for sure it will probably be hard to find out a lot about it

If the wiring is in excellent condition I would not attempt to rewire that range, doing so you'll likely make it a lot less reliable and possibly less safe. If you really want to do something and you're concerned about safety add fuses on each leg for each element in the wiring harness, that way if anything goes wrong with it either wiring or elements it'll quickly blow without any big fireworks Canadian electric ranges are often built this way for added safety

Wiring generally fails due to flexing it, rodents or general abuse by previous owners. Leave it alone as other have suggested. You may want a new cord. That is generally the only wires that get flexed and deteriorate.

I think was the full name, This one I think uses the Tuttle and Kift Monotube units and the clock driven infinite heat switches,If it all works its great!

Thanks for the replys guys! Seems L&H is a bit of a black hole for tech documentation. Ill have to try to salvage the schematic and fill in the pieces that are missing by tracing the circuits. Wont be too awful difficult with there only being a handful of them and maybe itll help someone in the future.

I replaced the power cord last night and have the unit functioning now, everything does seem to work with the exception of the "oven On" light.

Timer works, Broiler control works, oven thermostat seems to work (still need to confirm its controlling temperature correctly.

I did find a few wires that do need attention but all are exposed in the back of the unit and are only 110v for the burner temp indicator lights. Clockwork mechanism for burner control seems to function as well.

A few simple solder reheats ought to fix it right up. I had one light that wasnt functioning and found a bad solder joint or two. No biggie.
