Warning!

Asbestos is a very dangerous subsance to have around the home.

Please carefully pack the ironing board along with it's cover and I'll be over directly to pick it up. It is a huge risk for me to take, but then again what are friends for?

*LOL*

Greg, very cool. Now, do you really Iron that much? I bet NOT, but sistah aint always right. Love the "Maid of Honor". Yea right, that will be the day I am a Maid for someone, LOL

Enjoy!

Steve

Sanforized colorama

Oh Greg. For the sake of total retro, any chance of seeing you in the above outfit and hair-do posing and ironing?

What a catch!

Asbestos is not healthy but it is not as bad as say somethimg that is radioactive either. My undertanding is that any particle with a 1:2 (width:length) size ratio that becomes lodged in the lungs is a huge irritant. The body's response IIRC is growths/cancer.

AND!

Greg dear, when Laundress comes to pick that board up you can snap her pic for the picture thread!

Greg that is just beautiful. What a great idea that was. Perfect for ironing those tablecloths!! Oh I forgot you have that wonderful Ironrite for that!!! "Doesn't use it much" of course he does!!!

Guess Proctor held the patent for flip down edges that made the board a rectangle, so Sears had to make other arrangements.

Love those heavy metal legs on vintage ironing boards. Far more stable than the cheap ones found today.

Greg ... now that's an ironing board AND cover!!

The cover you're using is Sanforized ... I never knew what that meant!! I'm sure its washable too so you can rinse off all of that starch. :-)

I still have my Mom's early 1950's ironing board tucked away in the attic.

Greg, does the cotton pad & cover set have areas to cover the crank out wings? I wonder if there is anyplace catering to the laundry profession that might sell pads and covers for those boards.
Geoff, don't you remember all those ads in magazines for Sanforized cotton where two tee shirts were compared before and after washing? The Sanforized one was the same shape and size while the one that was not was all drawn up lengthwise and stretched out really wide.

It's gonna stay mint, that's for sure!

Me iron? Hell no. I do save flatwork for the Ironrite but rarely have a need for hand ironing anymore. When I worked at the bank, I ironed shirts & pants every day. Of course, none of these facts stop me from bringing home cool things like this or NIB irons but I really fail to see the relationship between "collecting" and NEED...

The Rid-Jid table I had was exactly like this new Sears Maid of Honor model - right down to the knobs on the handles. Terry is going to take the Rid-Jid back to Florida with him in September but I will keep my eyes open for you, L. I tossed the No-Burn Asbestos cover as the cotton batting was falling apart when I peeked in the bag.

Custom Made!

Wow! How cool to find it MIB. I'm still using the ironing board (Arvin) my mom got as a wedding shower gift.

Not that it gets much of a workout, you understand...

As for that cover, you can make your own! Imagine my surprise when I was in Jo-Ann (fabric store) and saw that you can buy that silver ironing board cloth by the yard. Who knew?

"Me iron? Hell no."

ROTF!!

That's lovely, Greg! I love the Insta-Square™ feature, too. I'm sure I'll get a slap from Ross for this, but I have to say that with the way I iron (perhaps three times a year; four in a leap-year), the tapered end just gets in the way.

There's no reason to have an ironing board to use it...it adds to the motif of the laundry room, or is a great buffet service, especially when it's an old, heavy, stable board like that one.

You know, kind of like storing chips in the dryer, as some people do :-P

("Which dryer, dad?")

Of course, in a similar spirit, Roger found that cakes go lovely in KitchenAid top racks, but that's a story for another time :-D

You tossed the no burn cover HELLLOOO??

Its "NO BURN" a "NO BRAINER" They were used extensively in ROME for hundreds of years and look what happened to them!

Ooo Bad Example...........

My Mom's is the Mary Proctor version I bet it was made by RID JID.

Ya know what the definition of a horny eskimo is?
A FRID JID MID JIT WITH A RID JID DIGIT.

Will have a peep on my Mary Proctor board to see if it lists the maker. Those MP boards are like gold! Those that have them won't part, and everyone is looking for one! Lucky souls seem to find them at estate sales and such for give away prices. I had to duke it out on eBay for mine.

Really do like the rectangular shape of the MP boards, but found myself using the vacuum ironing table yesterday for some things, and it wasn't half bad. The suction keeping things in place/drying the ironing made up for having to reposition items a few more times because of the narrow end.

Sorry, missed your question, Tom. There are portions of the cover that will allow for the extensions to move outward. The original cover was falling apart - you can see the bits of cotton on the floor under the board, but I had another Teflon cover from a little later on that had the wide top to allow for the extensions. When I put it on, it seemed too big and ill fitting so I just used the blue one I found at the sale. I think age had taken it's toll on the elastic edges which made it loose and sloppy. I could probably make a properly sized cover fairly easily - and would rather have cotton anyway.
