Manual can openers

In my lifetime I have used all 4 and I really liked the Swing-A-Way wall mounted.
Mom hanged hers inside the pantry and it was fast and easy to use.
Now I use the last photo, Good Cook Classic Safe Cut Can Opener because the Swing-A-Way portable tends to rust, I quess because of washing in the dishwasher.

Do they still make the Swing-away wall mount model?   I never see them anymore in stores both here in Ontario or Michigan

Mother Toggles came to visit one day and simply used cooking oil on a napkin and let the gears and cutting heads "eat it" P oof the rust on the cutting heds had disappeared!

So I no longer wash the can opener often, I simply use a cleen dry paper napkin to dry it after use thereby preventing rust.

We've always had good luck with our Swing-A-Way, too.

Unfortunately it seems like a lot of cans (especially pet foods) are switching to "pop top" style with pull ring.

I hate that yucky food-catching lip you're left with after popping the top... does anybody know if the "safety lid lifter" style openers work on cans with the pop top ring?

I don't "wash" the S-A-W, sponge the blade after use. Easy with handheld.

Have also heard the Chinese knockoffs don't last 2 weeks. Can't expect to cut a steel can with an aluminum blade. But machining aluminum is much easier/cheaper.

How does someone with arthritis open those pullring cans? Also dislike the lip.

We always had the can opener on the far left..the metal one. I think my dad is still using it..it's got to be at least 55 years old. In my adult housekeeping life I've always had the one in the middle. I've never had an electric can opener. My aunt and uncle gave my parents one once for Christmas..mom said it was more trouble to pull out from under the counter than to open the drawer and grab the opener..(or church key as my dad called it). My mother was also opposed to a lot of "clutter" on the kitchen counter..she said she didn't like the kitchen to look like a general store...the electric can opener was just one more thing that needed a tag. I think I might have used an electric can opener a few times in my life at someone's house. I think the swing aways are pertty cool..I've never entertained the idea of getting one but now I am

I doubt the safety lid openers can help with a pop top.  The seaming method is entirely different than on a standard can.

My current can opener might be an Oxo. At least, that's my best memory. All I remember for certain is that I bought it at Goodwill.

The "pop top" cans have mixed virtues--easy to open, but that wretched rim. However, one huge plus, from what one person whom I know said, they are wonderful for taking lunch to work. The can opener in her break room was on the other side of revolting. Of course, she could also have her own "at work" can opener. If I were in this situation, I'd probably aim for my own electric avocado green model just to have a little retro flair in my day. Plus it would be pretty clear if my can opener vanished and appeared on someone else's desk exactly what happened!

A part of me misses the old Swing-A-Way. That's what my family used, and in my memory, we only went through two of them. I don't think the first wore out completely before it was replaced, either.

Then, again, these days I'm using canned goods less and less. I'm very concerned about BPA in linings, and I'm trying to cook from scratch as much as possible. (Some scratch ingredients are in cans--but usually I feel there are better tasting options elsewhere. I honestly cannot understand why people still buy canned peas when frozen peas are so much better.)

I think some of the can openers got replaced before that wore out because they got nasty looking or a little rusty. All this despite attempts to keep them clean. I remember opening cat food for kitty and the smell of the food plus the site of the can opemer made me well you know......and I would take to that can opener with a tooth brush and some scouring powder. It was clean, but didn't really look clean. I have rather enjoyed pop tops. However, like Lord Kenmore, I am trying to do fresh or frozen as much as I can.

A POX on Pop Tops!

I hate, loathe, detest, despise and abominate pop tops!

The reason?

I like to get all the food I'm paying for out of the can, which requires a rubber spatula. The wide, sharp edge left at the rim of an open pop-top can chews the hell out of spatula edges.

Being very careful can help with not damaging the spatula, but this is another case of "progress" creating a problem where there wasn't one before.

I have a locking Oxo manual can opener.  Works like a charm.  Not dishwasher safe...at least that's what the instructions say, heh-heh.

I like my "Can-O-Mat".  It comes apart easily for cleaning and it's very durable.  I've used the same one for 30 years.
