March is GE Filter Flo month

A few members seem to be finding GE FilterFlo's all over and adding to the collection and fun...........

I am no exception, although I think I am in over my head with these......I already had 6 washers, working my way down to 3, and then this set comes along for 100.00, very nice, gas dryer(my first GE dryer), manuals and all, this one does not have a miniwash option, but I can change that if I keep it......

I am waiting for a call to come pick up another set very similar to these....for FREE......the dryer will be electric, and it does have the MB, plus dispenser...

When will the MADNESS end?......lol

Nice set indeed. I am guessing circa 1988. My aunt bought that model washer in November of 1988 to replace her 1970 500 Kenmore.

A really sweet machine!

If that is the dryer I think it is, the drum is a couple of inches deeper than the traditional GE model. The electric version had the heating element in a duct under the drum. Additionally, the drum has plastic baffles instead of the formed porcelainized steel.

GE called it the LLCD. The Louisville large capacity 27" dryer. It replaced the mega sized machine with the round porthole.

Magic clean is right, it does have the deeper drum and the plastic baffles....didn't pay attention to this at first.....

hard to believe that machines of this age not showing signs of useage, or else they wiped them down on ocassion, they were in a mudroom between garage and kitchen still hooked up, but you expect to see scum around the edges here and there, the dryer doesn't have the usual lint in the nooks and crannies, but just the same you expect the machines to have signs of detergent and softner spilled down the sides and in-between the cabinets, the only mess was under the machines after I moved them and a sock and washcloth that fell behind them......

I am also hitting into Neptune land again as well, about a month ago I went to pick up a set of Neptunes for 200.00, was told they were in excellent condition, normally skeptical of these things, got to the house and found out these were used as a prop for "staging" model homes, washer still had the bolts and straps in place from the factory...only unboxed and positioned in place for "show".....after I got there found out the entire "staging" contents of the home were for sale, they also loaded me up with toys for the kids, the roadrace set is MINE!.....lol

Maybe the GE and Hotpoint experts can confirm this. Is it true that a way you can visually tell that this is the larger capacity dryer is due to the large escutcheon plate behind the handle? Regular capacity dryers either have no escutcheon plate or a narrower one?

Most GE dryers had a FLAT rear on them....this one has an extended back plate, same as larger capacities of whirpool/Kenmores.....

Deeper Dryer

What's the deal on these? Did this style replace the "Big-Load" dryers. I see these time to time, but never saw the insides. I never knew they were actually a different size. I like the door handles on them, the cabinet looks like a standard capacity though. More pics of that dryer would be nice. Beautiful set indeed.

Well, I really like the dryer door w/ just the regular handle WITHOUT the escutcheon, myself...

And to me, the dryer opening ALWAYS looked better, OVAL-SHAPED, rather than seeing that big ROUND opening...

I remember always seeing those old newspaper ads showing Reg. Capacity GE machines (even when the washer or dryer advertised would be advertised as a LARGE CAP. model) opened, like that... (With the washer being filled w/ SOAP SUDS, too!)

Just miss how the GE & Hotpoint dryers whether reg. or large had the same type of opening & door; to me it seemed more "friendlier" that way...! LOL!

I have never thought of the dryers as handling the capacity that the larger washers could produce, but this larger tub has proved otherwise....I alway looked for the very large door and round opening as the large dryer to match the washer....

funny, with GE's "D" opening of the dryer, you would have thought Kenmore/Whirlpool woud have had this design to match the opening on their belt drive machines

I have said it before.......................................

That set is my absolute favorite GE washer and dryer of all time, when I went to buy that washer in 1991 they had changed the high back console style and removed the "General Electric" and replaced it with "GE" I was very dissapointed. I love these machines, is that a mini-basket washer also? I notice it is Extra Large Cap. Best of luck, I would trade my Speed Queens for these machines.

Unfortunately it is not a MiniBasket version, but I think I can change that....

I thought something was wrong with the clutch, it jumped right into high gear within the first agitation stroke, but found out its OK, slow speed works fine, normal/high speed kicks in quick, for spin also, water comes up and over into the tub during the spin....powerful pump too!, both filtering and draining...

One other thing, although very quiet, and powerful, but when the spin stops and the brake kicks in, instead of the 2 knocks to engage, I get 5 knocks and then it engages and stops the tub, doesn't seem to hurt anything, but I may have to replace the tranny later.......maybe someone has had experience with this?...

GE FILTER FLOW MONTH

Martin you picked the right month we have already pulled in three GE FFs in March. 1st one WWA8350GALAL 1989 little old lady machine in beautiful shape with a few small holes in the outer tub, [ replaced by an 8 year olt rebuilt WP DD washer]. 2nd one 1991 standard cap single speed machine { replaced by a rebuilt WP FL Duet Sport customer called me already and said her clothes have never been so clean, although she washed everything in the GE in Eco detergent and cold water ] This machine was a sticking mess a took the motor and clutch and crushed the machine. The 3rd one was another WWA8350GALWH this one was another sticking mess the frame where the motor attached broke and the motor fell and the clutch scraped on the frame and destroyed the clutch. This one I stripped and scraped, it was replaced by a new SQ FL washer, hopefully her constant under use of detergent will not harm the new SQ as fast as the GE. When I was showing her how to use the new machine we put a good sized load in it and I told them to always use hot water in this washer. All they had was cheap Arm&Hammer liquid detergent I put a full 1/2 cap full in and she said thats all I ever put in the old GE for a full load, and it showed you should have seen how gross the GE was.

 

I saved the almond WWA8350GALAL that was in such good condition and am going to convert our GE Dispense-all washer to almond by using the top and cabinet, this way we will have a matching set as we already restored one of the 31" wide almond electric dryers that matches the Dispense-all.

am I hurting this machine with the extra knocks for the brake?...it does engage and stop the tub....

I do also have a few drips from the top to tub seal, but I will investigate, maybe something in the way not letting it contact tight enough

I do remember on occasion my GE knocking like 5 times or so when the spin brake was engaged, it did not happen all the time, but it did on occasion, and I also was at my aunt's house once, and heard her machine do the same thing.

bigload round dryer opening GE dryers

I always thought it was pretty cheesy and cheap that GE would pair in advertisements so many of the extra large capacity machine models with the standard size opening (d-shaped) dryer and std. capcity machine when the big load dryer was still being marketed.  The st.d capacity dryers were really challenged if a fuyll load was put in the ex. large capacity washer.  Norhting but the big door dryer was a consideration for me when I bought mine in April 1978.  In fact, I would cruise through the appliance department of the department store I bought them from for almost a year after I bought the set.  I sold about 5 or 6 of those big door dryers when the salesman was showing sets to customers.  Larger area of tumbling had fewer wrinkles.

GE 27"EXTRA DEEP DRYER DRUM DRYERS

The electric versions of this dryer were very slow unless you had a very short clean vent attached to it. With the heater element in a can under the drum they had to have a very sensitive safety thermostat on top of the heater and this caused the heater to cycle off to often when trying to dry clothing except under ideal airflow situations. The gas version was a little better, but the larger extra wide dryer was a much better performer both in drying speed and ability to produce wrinkle free clothing. Problem was high cost of building and shipping such a large machine and half the time the delivery people could not get the dryer into the house and that meant a costly redelivery of a cheaper machine. So it was easy to see why it was discontinued in favor of a cheaper to build machine.

It's not even the stores that mix-match capacities of machines........

too many times people buy or replace a washer or dryer without consideration of its counter part at home, I don't think I have ever seen a small capacity washer teamed up to a large capacity dryer, its always the other way around....

and people always think when a salesman ask them what size dryer they have at home when buying a washer, that its a sales gimmick to buy both.....their only tying to solve a potential problem......

but yes it s true about machines fitting in doorways.......I have a matched SQ from the 70's, but the dryer is too wide to fit down the basement stairwell, so it sits alone in the garage, I am contemplating taking it apart, and then reassemble it once in the basement....

a basic machine....one speed, two cycle, standard capacity with the rim-flo filtering.....another very quiet machine......just needs a little dusting, other than that, shines realy nice!

The wash action of this one reminds me of Mom's V12.....at half load, you can't leave the lid open, water is splashing out everywhere.....

The dryer you have is the TOL model that was sold along with the TOL Spotscrubber Washer.

Yeah...wouldn't it be great to find the SpotScrubber washer to match....I may keep this as a set for now, but if the SS comes along, then I will pair them up, and let the 5 cycle move on....

Hotpoint

When I moved to Atlanta, my first apartment was equipped with a washer and dryer.  They were Hotpoints just like the one pictured above.  I can't tell you how badly I wanted to drag that machine out of the laundry room and replace the belt and clutch.

 

They sure washed well, though.
