Geoff came over for the day Saturday and we gave my Mom's Maytag Wringer (E2L) Washer a face lift. It was built in May of 63, and the only washer we had until we got a Speed Queen set in 71. Replaced a few parts, cleansed her up good and gave her a fresh coat of paint-Wow is she a beauty! The only work this machine has ever had done was to replace the cord after a basement fire in 1969. This machine still has the ORIGINAL BELT!! Moms is on the right, the Gray Ghost is on the left is from 1933 and we will tackle that another weekend. That was $12.00 at a St. Paul Estate Sale. Thanks to Geoff for spending the day with me, it was so fun to work on this, but ever more fun to get to know such a great guy. Applianceville is very lucky to have Geoff in the neighborhood!

Deluxe Agitator

Geoff brought me the deluxe agitator with the lint filter and the water lever marking on it. We didn't have this one, but instead the black bakelite standard gyrator. Look how the aluminum shined up!

There she is in all her glory!

I am so pleased with this. Mom isn't with us any longer, so this project was very special to me! Had Dad over today for Father's Day today and showed him. He gave me the history of when and where he bought the machine. What great timing wouldn't you say?

Jetaction,
That is just one beautiful piece of machinery. Geoff is the best. I only wish he could help me with mine! Wahhhh!

What a fun day, and what a nice way to honor your Mom! I hope I'll get to see you and Geoff when I visit in September.

What a great looking machine!

I love what you guys did with the Maytag. I have a "new" Commander yesterday that I received for free. Sure wish Geoff could do his magic on my two Maytag's, A master and now a commander. Illinois isn't that far off. the serial number to my new one is:A203819c Have fun now. ABC o matic, Gary

Well ... Don and I sure had a great time! We had fun visiting and Don is the ultimate host ... even without ELECTRICITY!! The Twin Cities had a big storm on Friday night and knocked out Don's power until almost noon on Saturday. We didn't need electricity to do some of the restoration work, so it worked out fine.

It was EXTREMELY humid and windy on Saturday; I'm surprised we were able to get the painting done. The humidity in Foley was 91% when I got home; it was close to that at Don's, too. We were putting "Maxine" back together and the paint was still sticky. We still need to do some more touch-ups and a couple of mechanical things, but Don should be able to use his Maytag for now. What's left to do can be done at a later time.

Don's Mom took care of her Maytag, so it made things easier for us. The fire that he was talking about left its mark, however. After removing the tub, we discovered soot on the underside of the tub and on the top of the motor; it all cleaned up well!!

Did you all like the interior shot of the machine with the tub removed? That's Don's work ... he scrubbed and brushed and painted ... it came out so well. Don also removed each caster, cleaned the wheels and oiled them well and painted the leg extensions!! I think Don realized how simple these machines were to work on. Fortunately, we had no major mechanical problems.

GOOD JOB, DON!! He loves detailing; that's a big thing with working on these machines. Now, he will be able to care for this machine through the years.

Don's Mom, Maxine, may not be "physically" with us anymore, but she was with us on Saturday!! I think she helped stave off the rain ... it was POURING when I was driving home!! :-)

What did your Dad think of all of this Don? Did they purchase this machine at Warner-Stallion (?) like you thought?

Thanks for the fun ...

Geoff

Don's Collection ...

I forgot (if you can believe that!) to mention Don's great collection of vintage machines.

I couldn't believe all the wonderful machines he has in his basement and garage!! He has a new turquoise Maytag suds-saver set that I couldn't believe in his basement!! His doughboy range is to die for, as are the rest of his wonderful machines!! His garage ... well ... I'm speechless!! I got to see the Maytag 142 that he and Greg worked on (another suds saver!) and I apologize for drooling all over it! :-) There was a Kenmore Visimatic and his Easy twin-tubs; he has a lot of jewels that are yet to be displayed.

I think Don DEFINITELY needs a bigger basement/showroom!!

I LOVED it all and was sorry that we didn't have time to "play" with all those great machines. Next time, we'll get to try some of those babies out!

Don what a beautiful machine and what a great story to go with it. I know this will be one machine that you will always treasure. Thanks for sharing. Terry

In action.....

Thanks for all the kind words from everyone. This machine was bought in early 1964 at Werner Stallion on Snelling Avenue & Larpenteur in St. Paul. We have a Hamilton gas dryer that Mom used when she wasn't haging clothes out on the line. She did her wash on Friday's. Here is "Max" working away, just like she did in 64!

wringing away

I won't post every pic, but I did two rinses. The first one in a Maytag twin tub, and second in a model "A" Gray Ghost Maytag Wringer. Than off to the line for drying. Towels went in to the Maytag 806 dryer. 4 Maytag's for this laundry day-the production was more detaied than a 3 act opera! The fat lady has sung-be nice now!

that's great Don!

That's a nice machine Don. Isn't Geoff great! I've been getting some helpful hints from him too for my recently found N2. OK so now I'm out, I'm a closet wringer washer fan. I have 3 now in my collection: An Inglis (Canadian Whirlpool) the Maytag N2 and a Speed Queen model 91P (built the year I was born in 64).
Now I'm envious for a model E as nice as yours and Geoff's. Congrats again on the nice restore.
Eddy
