Maytag A207 not advancing in cycle-- fixable?

Hello!

I inherited a Maytag a207 washing machine that I would love to use. It works but the cycle does not advance and I need to manually turn the knob for each phase of the cycle. I'd like to know if this is a fixable problem (I'd be happy to tinker) or if it's a problem that requires a hard to find part and I should find someone to rescue/rebuild/scrap for parts...

Generally a stripped gear in the timer motor if it's a Kingston timer. It could be old hardened grease which locks up the metal gearing if it's a Mallory timer.

There were several different timers and timer motors used for these depending on the year, options, and timer manufacture.

You'll have to remove the console and get the exact timer part#

There was:

204454-1 (Early Mallory timer. Some came with a blue band around the escapement, others didn't.)

204454-2 (Kingston timer)

204454-3 (Later Mallory timer).

A 207 probably has the 204454-2 Kingston (black clamshell) timer in it.

We also need to know if you have a Permanent Press Cycle on the timer dial. Later timers came standard with that cycle but some of the early ones didn't.

Reply one good advice, Dan, I’m sure all A 207 had a permanent press cycle. The A206 was made either way.

A 206 timer is the same part#, that's why I mention the Permanent Press cycle just incase an old 206 timer and timer dial were installed as a quick fix sometime during its life.

Kingston timer, and has permanent press. I can take it apart and look for a stripped gear -- is it an easy replace?

They're easy to take apart, just drill the 2 rivets out at the ends which holds the cover on.

I don't see a 205033 timer motor available anywhere. It was discontinue in April of 2018 and all sources have dried up. That was a very common timer motor and used in lots Maytag washers. Dave Harnish years ago claimed he has a bunch of internal gearing for these Kingston timer motors. It would be worth sending him an email once you discover the stripped gear. He may even have a timer motor.

Otherwise, you'll need to purchase a 205545 timer. There are used and new ones available on Ebay.
