Hello all, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this situation. I have spent the last week completely disassembling, cleaning, and reservicing an old Maytag A412 washer. I started to get really excited, because I was able to get the thing humming smoothly, looking like new. But just as I was about to finish, I tried to tighten the screw that holds the plastic agitator to the metal spin shaft, when I heard a little crunch. Upon closer inspection, I realized that the head of the old screw had snapped off.
Well the agitator was still on there snug, so I figured it was no big deal. But when I washed the first loads, I noticed drops of water flying off the transmission case during the spin cycle at high speed. It is obviously a small leak in the tub seal, which I could take of easily, if ONLY I COULD GET THE AGITATOR OFF!!!
So is this baby scrap??? Are my hours of hard work in vain? Or does anyone have any magical suggestions?
I have already tried a screw extractor, but it is a small cramped space, and the surface of the remainder of the broken screw is very uneven and won't take a drill in its center.
Thanks in advance,
Nick
