Maytag A606S Problems

My trusty Maytag is starting to give me some issues. When I do a normal or large load it agitated really slow when it first starts to run. It makes a noise like it is running slow. If I turn it off and then back on it usually corrects the problem. I do not know what could be causing it.

There is nothing leaking from the transmission
The machine is not leaking

I have not ever changed the belts but they seem ok yet
Also I do not use the suds saver thing

Is your Maytag in a cold basement or room that is typically cold in the winter? Often times the cooler temps can cause the now 40-50 year old gear case grease to take several minutes to reach an operating temp where agitation is normal. This isn’t going to really hurt anything now - long term fix would be a full trans clean and rebuild.

We had an old Maytag in our unheated garage and it would run slow at first during cold weather.  Now we have an '87 A712 Maytag in our unheated basement and it does the same thing.

I wouldn’t say the basement is cold as the wood burner is in that room also but it is against a stone wall where a draft comes through the door. The room is usually between 60 and 80 degrees F.

60 is cold enough to slow it down.  My experience has been that it usually only takes about a minute of operation for it to get up to speed.  You also need to take into account what is being washed.  If it's a full load of towels, sometimes even on a warm day agitation speed can vary somewhat until the entire load has turned over.

Ok thanks. I just wanted to know if it was something happening to it. It is my daily washer.
