Hi All, Got a call from Mom in NY last week, the Maytag fills for the rinse but won't agitate. Timer motor won't restart. I assume it's a corroded contact. I'm too cheap to buy a new timer, and too stupid to fix the original. Can I substitute a 208 timer I have in storage? It would only be temporary. Anyone see any problems with doing this as a quick fix? Any idea what a new timer costs, and are they NLA? All suggestions appreciated!

Hey Bobby,

Does the machine fill and agitate on the wash portion of the cycle? If not, it might be the water level switch?

Part # for timer is 204476 about $95.00; Model # a208 uses a different timer Part #204454 about same price. Email me if you have more info.

It was great to meet you at Chuck and Rich's a few weeks ago!!
I really enjoyed you playing the piano!!!

Thank you, John. I thought of the water level switch, but I suspect the timer. I'll check it out next wknd, and let you know for sure. Thanks for the part #'s. Hope you are well. The part # is different because the 208 doesn't have the soak cycle. Great seeing you last wknd.

You should be able to get a rebuilt timer from Midwest Timer Service for less than $95...

My grandmother's Highlander would stop just before the rinse agitation too. Once the machine filled for rinse, the timer would hum as if it were trying to move and if you smacked the knob, it would take right off and finish the cycle normally. It was used this way for a while until the whole machine was replaced in May 1975. The Highlander was moved to the basement to wash rugs and work clothes but the timer was never repaired.

You might try spraying the insides of the timer with a good contact cleaner. Sometimes a little cleaning and lubricating will help a timer work better. Timers do tend to get dirty and bind up from time to time. Ive got many a timer working again with just a little lubrication and cleaning......especially the timers on washers that have sat out in a field for 20yrs.......!!

My mom's 1977 A608 had the same disease, mom treated her automatics like they were wringers: she was always fiddling with them opening the lid, taking clothes out, adding this or that.
For the last year or so that she had that washer, every now and then the machine would refuse to resume after the lid was opened, it would just sit there, with a faint hum coming from the timer dial. My suggestions to have someone come and look at the machine were ignored, and if I remember right mom's "fix" was to push the knob in, give the dial a few good cranks around and the machine would start again.
The same disease killed her 1982 TOL Jet-clean DW too.

Hi Kenny,
Delicate cycle? It has regular, perm press, and soak. But it is brushed aluminum. I am interested if you have one. Delicate is written in above the 4-6 minute mark on the regular cycle. Are sure this one isn't for a fabric-matic 09 series?

My A608 is very similar, minus the sudz return. Any more ideas how to fix mine? If anyone has a spare I'd be glad to buy it.
