Maytag A700

What makes the "stroke" longer or shorter for the agitation on a Maytag? I know mine should be the longer stroke, but is it the motor that dictates this and if so, how do I know what motor to use if I need to replace mine (1962 A700)? Thanks

i think it is in the transmission....hope someone more knowledgable replies...

It's the transmission

All the motor does is supply the motion to make everything go... the gearing in the transmission determines (generally) how fast the agitation is (aside from the slow and regular speed of a 2 speed motor) and how far the agitator swings (the stroke) before it reverses.

Chuck and Kevin....that was my second guess. I understand things only so far, then need the help and advice of others. So it means that any 2 speed Maytag motor that fits will work? Thank You for the help.

Yes.... a two speed motor should work fine.... but if your machine originally only had one speed, you will not be able to take advantage of the 2nd speed the motor is capable of. Also you will have to pay close attention to how you wire the motor up (again, only if it's a single speed machine).
