maytag a700 will not agitate or spin

belts are good. at the start of spin cycle machine makes its usual clunk and about a quarter turn then stops and hums.

so if not belts - ??

Maytags have a usual clunk? ? ? ? ?

at this point, were going to guess, transmission locked up......

can you spin the pulley by hand?.......clockwise=agitation....counter-clockwise=spin

if the transmission pulley turns, and operates in both directions as it should, I would rule out its locked up....

does the motor run without the belts on?

could, but you said it spins and releases fine....

just wondering if its the motor, works OK alone, but under a load, theres not enough strength....

seems odd for everything to work not attached, yet assembled together, and something is stopping it...

if it was just a spin issue, I would almost say theres a sock stuck between the tubs....but since it wont agitate either...

this one is a puzzler

ok. thank you for your advice - this helped a lot. i took the top off and looked for a stray sock - nothing there. ran the spin cycle with just the drain pump belt. all was well. ran the spin with just transmission belt. all fine.
put all back together with a load of clothes. agitation, fine. drain fine, rinse ok.
stopped working on the last spin cycle. just a hum.
same just hum when i turned it back to the first cycle.

motor pulley feels hot. do i need a new motor? motor over heating would do this? or is it a bad solenoid?.

i just took the belts off and put the drain pump belt on by itself. drained fine. put both belts back on and it spun and drained my clothes.

maybe a new timer? i am still puzzled. but i have one load of clean clothes.

others may chime in, but I am going with an overheated motor.....

probably easier to just replace....

usually you can find good deals through ebay...some with free shipping.....
