Maytag Age?

I was searching around but couldn't find it. Does anyone have the info for figuring out ages of Maytag machines from their serial numbers?

Here we go!

The machine is a near perfect A806 from Pensylvania. My friends James & Veronica are having a baby, and needed to replace their WCI Frigidare junker with a machine that would be able to power through loads of baby clothes. Neither of them are washer fans, but both are good people who appreciate well built things and beauty in every-day items. The only thing missing is the chrome lint trap.

I saw the machine on Craigslist and James and I picked her up last weekend. A quick trial run outside today and she fired right up - cold and sludgy but running nevertheless. Once the WCI was pushed aside, the floor swept and some leveling blocks of wood were procured, I set to the task or cleaning. The fabric softner gunk was epic. Luckily, they use that liquid TIde with the Downy already included. I showed them both that there is indeed a lint filter that needs cleaning at the end of the washday.

Sidenote: when the machine threw the washwater for the maiden load, the laundry tub backed up a bit. Apparently all the lint the WCI had been dumping into the old sewers had slowed them a bit, but the Maytags pump was no match!

WOW!

They're certainly lucky to have you as a friend! The 806 looks great! It isn't missing the stainless trim on the lint filter, it was an option that didn't last very long. Judging by the rusty screws on the rebuildable pump, you should replace it now as it will leak in the very near future. Purchase a genuine Maytag pump, part # 202203. No substitutes!! Get the pump from ebay, you'll save lots of $$.

Sweet, thanks for the heads up. This makes their machine younger than mine, which is a '71 vintage. Nice to know its not missing the chrome filter. Is the pump the same, regardless of the bleach dispenser, or is that one the specific one for machines with the dispenser?

Do you think I ought replace the belts as a matter or course? My friend is a car guy, and inquired about changing the transmission oil, but thats got to require quite a bit of work, and the machine runs just fine. I recomended against it.

one more question:

If I buy a new pump and install it, is it trivial to rebuild the old pump, with new screws perhaps? Stainless might be a good choice. Is there a how-to out there?

Between this machine, my A806, and the stack unit I am about to be responsible for, I should probably have some parts set aside.

You might as well go new on the pump. I don't know how many rebuild parts are still available for the old pump. The new pump comes with a port for the bleach injection. You will just need to take a drill bit and gently open up the hole in the center of the port to make it ready for the bleach system.

As Andrew mentioned, plan on getting a new pump and calling it good. Very very pretty machine! One of these fun cross over A806. Still has the front chrome strip was one of the first without the SS filter. Never-the-less, very pretty Maytag!
