My trusty Maytag gas dryer has begun leaking gas. I have done regular maintenance, glides, belt, etc. But I don't know how to go about diagnosing and repairing a gas leak. Repairman suggested it's time for a new one. I hate to get rid of it!

Spray a diluted detergent solution on all gas connections (starting at the supply line) and components (valve, pilot light assembly if it has one) and watch for bubbles that will indicate a leak. In a pinch I've used something already mixed like Windex.
DO NOT listen to the so-called "repair" man who suggested replacing the dryer -- at least not until you've determined where the leak is and what's involved in stopping it. It could be as simple as tightening up a connection somewhere.

worst case, if not one of the connections....just replace the gas valve itself.....easy as pie
Does it still work, and heat? Maybe it's not igniting the burner, and you're smelling residual gas.

Hi Jack, If you only have a gassy smell when its running it is very unlikely you have any type of gas leak.
Look at the flame when the burner is in operation, it should be mostly blue and not blowing away from the end of the burner tube.
Are you operating this dryer on propane ?, I have found that propane often smells worse than NG, It looks like the dryer is basically outside your home, but if there are any chemical odors in the area of the dryer you can get some really bad smells when you run the dryer or even in the clothing.
