Maytag Dryer

Can anyone advise me of the manufacturing date of the following Maytag Dependable Care dryer?

Serial: 10687654QY

Were these good machines?
Just got one dropped off to me by a neighbor who took it out of a 90 year old woman's house who got rid of it because the unit smelled.

It does have a funky odor coming from the lint filter holder/air duct.

I just took it all apart and it seems like she threw a can of carpet fresh powder into it as it was all caked up in the fan blades and housing. Threw the whole duct, fan and lint filter into the dishwasher and ran it thru with lemon cascade and it didnt smell anymore. But the smell IS still there. but no lint buildup or pests nesting!

Anyway, just curious about how old it may be and if it is worth yanking my Kenmore 70 series dryer out.

is the best dryer I have ever owned.

The IntelliDry is wonderful, I almost never use the timer settings.

I wish I could help you with establishing the date of manufacture.

Steve, this is the second series of Dependable care Dryers after mine, which I boutght December 1994 My panel style was phased out in late 1995 or early 1996. I'd say this one is early 1996 or slightly later.

Steve, that is the same model Maytag dryer I have with the matching washer, it's been an excellent performer from day one! I would really advise you to keep it.

The only potential issue those had was to throw the motor, esp. if it was improperly vented. You'd know it, though, as it would make a 'grinding' noise as the motor tried to start... Should be reversable on it's door swing.

Yes it has the reversible door and it is hinged on the right which is perfect with the LG FL hinged on the left and sitting to the left of the dryer.
It looks like my original Neptune control panel but without the classic neptune door.

Only problem is that the previous user got rid of it becasue it smells. Kind of like musty socks but I took it apart last nite and the fan was loaded with a load of what looked and smelled like "CarpetFresh." I took the blower housing and lint filter ductwork out of it and washed them and they smelled fine when the came out but once I put it back together, the smell came back. I guess I just need to use it and it will get better. Like I said in aprevious post, no bugs, rodents or any lint accumulation at all.
We had a Maytag gas dryerthat was nearly 30 years old in NY and it dried rings around the KenWhirl we have now. I think I will try playing with it a bit more in the garage tonite and maybe hook it up tomorrow and see how it does.

Steve, I really do like my dryer. It dries better than the 1986 Lady Kenmore it replaced. I only wish the drum was larger than it is, the size of a Whirlpool drum.

Thanks Robert, now I have a timeline for it. I installed it in the laundry room yesterday afternoon. It will get its first true trial today as soon as the wash is done in the still running LG FL!

It is a whole lot quieter than the Kenmore and will hopefully work for many more years. Having been used by a then 78 year old woman and her husband, how much wear and tear could it have on it? The inside bottom of the frame had hardly any lint accumulation and everything is still shiny. More than I can say for the Kenmore. But then again, we do alot more laundry!

BTW, here is the serial for the Kenmore..can you guesstimate its delivery date?

Looks like a 1988 "70" series model??? When it comes to dryers,for the $$$ I don't see anything faster or better performing than a W/P Kenmore 29" dryer. I never thought Maytags were better performers considering the cost. Construction is a bit better though (some had porcelain tops).

Gone but not forgotten!

First, thanks to everyone who pitched in to get me the info on the Kenmore pair!

Just wanted to let you all know, I posted an ad on Craigslist last night and got a bite on it this morning. A student at Embry Riddle in Daytona, called and said he wanted them both. Came down about 2 hours later with his pickup and the Kenmore pair is off to a new home. Sure beats lugging them to the curb and sending them to the crusher!

BTW, the Maytag does have a porcelain top and seems to dry faster than the Kenmore. Tomorrow with the whites will be the test!

Personally, I just think a dryer works better when the heat comes from the back and flows thru the clothes to the front. The Kenwhirls have the heat on the left and the exhaust on the right and I just think it doesn't get into the clothes as well. Just a personal observation.

That "Carpet Fresh" stuff is a build up of fabric softener crud. People just don't realize how this stuff ruins dryers.
The smell should diminish in time if you washed it out very well.
