Maytag Integrated W/D Stack Unit - Dependable Care Model

Hi,

I have a Maytag integrated washer/dryer stack unit, purchased about 12 years ago. It is a Dependable Care model, LSE7804ACM.

There was a plastic burning odor last week from the dryer and the firemen said it was probably the motor. Initially I was going to replace the whole unit, as it is 12 years old, but read that dryers are usually an easy, cost-effective fix. Have been contemplating, but the washer has stuck on spin a few times this year and I'm wondering if that, too, could be ready to fail at 12 years old.

Are you familiar with this unit and its quality, and what do you think about just repairing the dryer?

That is a very good stack setup. Built heavier than just about anything on the market today, it's worth at least a service call for a estimate. If it's a motor, you are probably looking at a >very< ballpark est of around $200 - $350 depending on your market. It can be a little more trouble for you but some repair shops charge a LOT less if you bring the stack to their shop and possibly turn it around faster as well.

My sister's Maytag dryer had issues with the blower fan- the plastic part that forms the squirrel-cage blower itself,not the motor. If yours self-destructed or came lose the lack of air-movement and heat buildup may explain the odor.

Sounds like the washer timer is protesting as well.

The unit you describe is a workhorse and would best be repaired at any cost in my (limited) opinion.

Blower & Heat Buildup

Heat buildup from the blower fan -- sounds scarey. Is this a house fire hazard? I've been trying to find out, other than lint blockages, if these types of breakdowns that make burning odors could result in a house fire. I just happened to walk downstairs and smell this and was able to power down.

Machine Quality

This is such great news to hear the machine is a good solid one. A rare thing these days, it seems. Have always liked it and will nurse it along over the years. What type of breakdowns are not worth fixing with it?

Will also have him check the timer/spin stick on the washer so I don't have to worry about it overheating if I don't catch it happening.

I thought I'd have him check over the washer unit while he's here, also, for old worn washers, parts, seals, whatever. Good idea or don't fix it if it ain't broke?

Stack Unit

I had the same set, I took it a part and cleaned it. Under the dryer is a panel that houses everything, the unit I had was about the same age and it had quite a large build up of lint inside. It s possible just a good cleaning may work. As for the timer, I took mine apart and I am sure the wiring diagram was easy to follow, if you wanted, you could replace yourself. Just a thought. J

New Home for the Stack

I sold it last month to a wonderful couple who needed it for their lake house here in GA. I picked it up on CL 3 mos ago, because I wanted to see how it all worked. I took it apart and cleaned it up and then posted it back on CL. I really liked the unit and will regret not having it when I move downtown. I have several machines now that I have acquired. So it was a matter of no space to store it. The unit is the best stack out there so I agree with everyone, it is worth fixing for sure. There is no better unit that washes, fills to the top, no dumb down rinse or wash temps. The dryer dried quick as well.

That's funny, I never knew people were so interested in and even collected washing equipment, until visiting this site. I've always liked the machine. Not too many dials, clean clothes and, yes, quick drying! Has always worked like a charm.
