Maytag motor spring and glide kit

I bought a spring and glide kit for my Maytag and plan to change it out tomorrow.  I have the orbital transmission (if that makes a difference).  Mine has the square glides and the two springs offset to one side.  Does someone have either detailed instructions or some scans of a service manual to guide me through this?  I looked at the thread from echolane but her motor mount is made different than mine.  Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Hey Joe -

While the glide may look different, the procedure is the same. I actually prefer your glide over the earlier ones. Easier to remove/install - all the hold down bolts are accessible through the top!

I may be showing my ignorance but how does it all come apart and go back together?

It's pretty simple actually. Once you have the motor out of the machine, you'll see that the two halves of the glide will slide apart as the top half has openings on the front side for it to slide off the bottom half. You'll be able to separate the halves once you remove the springs. Clean the glide tracks and reassemble with the new glides and a nice coat of Poly-Lube.

I am curious though as to the need to replace the glides/springs. Is it not preforming well during either agitation or spin?

Spin is pretty slow to get up to speed.  It starts the spray rinse before all of the water has even been pumped out of the tub.  Shortly after the spray rinse completes all of the water is pumped out.  I tried a new set of belts last weekend and performance didn't change any.  When I push the motor mount without the belts it hangs slightly when it springs back.  I adjusted the pump to where the motor just barely moves when the belt is squeezed to 1/4"

Ah, OK. One last way to test the health of the motor glide is to take the belts off and push the motor along the glide a few times. It should snap back with confidence.

If not, then a new set of springs and a cleaned and re-lubed glide set should help.

Is the little tube of lube that comes with the kit enough for the job?

Yep, it is enough. Coat the 4 glides first, and use the rest on the tracks.

last question I promise....

OK this is the last question before I start on this tomorrow.  Should I add a third spring on the right side where it appears one can be added.  I have heard this helps agitation and spin to be faster, just curious?

Start with the two fresh springs from the kit. I wouldn't add the third spring (use one of the originals) unless it is absolutely necessary. These were designed to work efficiently with two.

The hardest part is going to be getting the pulley off. Sometimes it's darn near impossible to break the setscrew loose.

dimples in the glides

The glide has a dimple on one side, which side goes which, I didnt think to look before i removed the old ones

Put the dimples to the inside of the glide rails.

ok so by the picture, the dimples are facing the top piece that bolts down to the washer baseplate is that considered the inside or outside? you can see the dimple in the top left corner

Inside, meaning the dimples would contact the inside of the rail. It appears from the photo you have them reversed. I cannot say with certainty but I suspect they were designed to gather and redistribute lube along the track.

Your glide mechanism looks to be in tip-top-shape!

Looks like you got the setscrew off the pulley in good shape, no new screw needed.

 

Also, don't remount the motor to the machine backwards, like I did last week..........

I did get the set screw off. My dad is here this weekend and has offered some good advice. One of the screws that the nuts go on to hold the glide to the motor has been stripped a little. From a previous repair maybe. So I am heading to the hardware store today to see what can do. The nut I took off wont go back on. Also one of the screws that holds the motor to the baseplate had rusted through so I need more of those. I can tell it is a lot harder to push since I have replaced the springs
