Maytag Neptune MAH 5500BW

In today's circular from Bernie's(an appliance giant in CT) the price on the above Maytag is $599 plus a $40 rebate. Wow!
A big difference from the $999 when it first came out in 1997.

I wonder if the price reduction reflects the drop in 'Maytag' quality as in the other product lines.

Back last fall, I paid $350 to repair my original Neptune(wax motor and circuit board).

Although I still enjoy my Neptune, I wonder what I would replace it with(another Neptune???)

What to Buy

It is hard to know what to buy. I have reservations about function, design or service of every machine made. I was hopeful LG would make a good showing, yet there is not a good service system in place. All the major suppliers have been disappointing. In the end, it become clearer to me that puchasing Whirlpool is the way to go. Somewhat middle of the road, but since they own the road, the chances of service are better.
I would rather be guest of honor at an enema party, than to ever have to submit to Sears repair, so no matter what brand I used, I would never buy it from Sears.

not impressed w/Neptune

Gary: I bought a new version Neptune (MAH6700, with window) in May, and a Neptune dryer, the 9700. The washer seemed cheaply made, flimsy control knob, etc. Also, the capacity wasn't what I expected. It is now for sale. The dryer made an annoying thumping noise which turned out to be a designed-in defect in the stainless-steel drum where it's welded; the metal is wrinkled on either side of the weld and makes a racket when it rides over the support rollers. Not only did I not like the idea of paying almost $1000 for such a racket, but I'm sure that the rollers will fail as a result-probably after the warranty is up. Home Depot took it back. I bought a Whirlpool Duet HT washer and matching dryer-no comparison on quality! The Maytag stuff is simply junk, and not worth what it costs. Note that the Neptune line is now made by Samsung, in Korea. I would definitely recommend the Duet hands down! (Note-the full-size Duets are made in Germany. However, the new smaller Duet Sport hasn't been around long enough for real feedback, and I don't think it's made by the same company-be careful!)

Guess the Maytags of today do not even begin to match the supposed quality of the original Neptunes(which were prone to problems).

Just goes to show you....the older stuff is worth saving......
