Something told me to visit the local used appliance store today. And I went over and saw 2 washers and 1 stove sitting outside. I saw the shape of the console and the drain hose poking out I immediately went over to it and saw it was A Maytag Neptune TL. I immediately asked if I could have it and was told I could. My mom moved our car between the Roll-Off Crates and Me and the owner loaded the machine up. It was full of water so me and the owner dumped it all out and for the machine being almost full and hearing a groaning when I spin the drum I automatically suspect that the Clutch Is bad. A new clutch is $240 but I might be able to take the clutch out and regrease it using waterproof and heatproof bicycle grease. the grease that MAYTAG packed it with is cheap white-lithium grease. If my clutch is broken beyond regreasing does anyone have a spare?

There is a dedicated YouTube Video on regreasing the clutch?

Maytag Neptune TL

Hi Kelly, If it groans when you turn the tub you likely have a bad main seal and bearings.

The machine being full of water is either a bad pump, something caught in the pump or I have seen a few of these with board problems and the board and relay are not sending power to the pump. Try putting a test cord on the WP and plug it in to see if the pump operates and pumps out water.

The clutch on these washers are a dry clutch so adding grease is probably not a good idea.

Clutch

Interesting. John I'll take a look at it. I'll take the clutch off and see if the groan persists. if it does then I'll order a bearing kit. the Serial starts with 16 so it's the newer style clutch. I'll try to look at it and see. someone on youtube regreased the clutch and it fixed it for 6 or so years. Link below is not my video.

maytag Neptune TL [ Clutch Greasing ? ]

Hi Kelly, I watched the video , I am assuming that the guy that made it is not an AW member so I am going to say it, HE IS AN IDIOT, He has very little clue how this washer even works.

He has almost no clue what is wrong with his washer, the reason he is greasing the clutch bearing is because WATER is getting in the bearing from the failed main seal above, you can see all the rust on the top of the clutch.

This is a major problem with the internet, anyone can get on it and say what ever they want with no qualifications, experience Etc Etc.

A very important life lesson is to know who you are dealing with, would you let this guy work on your teeth ?

do surgery on your eyes ?,

At least he is not even pretending to be an appliance tech or trying to charge for his advice as he would starve waiting for many to pay for this nonsense.

He is kinda a IDIOT for not replacing the tub seal. You're right on that for sure! If I see rust on my clutch I'll grease it and replace the tub seal. If that will kill my clutch and not free it then I will have to wait a little bit and order a brand new clutch $240 (COSTLY!) and a Tub seal $21. The part is still available. I think it's weird though because the Calypso is obsolete every mechanical part for a Calypso is NLA. The Clutch and tub seal are still available. I'll investigate the groaning I'll do the bearings if necessary.

Good news!

I finally got into taking it apart and found out that the clutch bearings are completely dry. there is white powder falling out which tells me that the White lithium grease has dried up. I plan to add Phil wood to the needle bearings and I am also replacing the tub seal. There is a lot of rust on top of the clutch so I am greasing the clutch bearings with phil wood and replacing the tub seal. Like you said John. It would be idiotic if I didn't replace the tub seal. It failed because WATER got into it from the failed tub seal.

Neptune TL

I did a bearing Job on a Neptune TL- it was quite the job.. had to go to a farm store and find a huge socket to take the nut off- along with a air compressed impactor!

I wish I did Documentation :/

I got the bearings out.

Once you have removed the tub remove the belt and clutch from the bottom of the machine. break the big nut by making a hard left turn or having someone hold the drum for you remove the tub ring. Then use a block of wood to tap out the inner drum. Then use a steel punch(be careful to not damage the spacer) to pound out the old bearing. then I used a steel pipe to pound out the rear/bottom bearing. Waiting on the bearings still I'll send photos when I'm about to put in the new bearings.

I got the machine working again!

I cleaned out the sludge from the washer basket. Replaced the Tub Seal and bearings successfully! I took the clutch and repacked it with White Lithium Grease. the old stuff dried up from the leak. I never took any photos I was so concentrated on this project that I completely forgot to take photos. Video coming tomorrow.
