Maytag performa will not spin

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

If you can continuously rotate the drive pulley CCW and the agitator agitates, the transmission is bad.

Eric

its not the transmission

i can hear the drum trying to turn but it will only turn slowly and when its in the spin cycle the agitator isn't going back and forth so it cant be the transmission...im gonna take apart the thrust bearing kit and wash all the dirt out of it because i did leave it outside all winter...and the bottom is covered in mud so that must be why it wont engage? gonna try cleaning it out anyway....

Yeah, could be the splines on the brake rotor are stuck to the splines on the transmission and won't release or the thrust bearing/cams are dirty or combination of both.

Eric

Not really. One trick you can try is to rotate the pulley CCW about 1/4 turn and hold it there while using a large flat blade screwdriver to go between the spokes of the pulley and between the lip at the brake rotor and stator and give it a twist to try and free the brake rotor.

Well you see

the brake rotor usually turns when i tip the washer over and turn the pully very slowly by hand but it wont engage at all when the washer starts spinning in the upright position (probably the motor starting so fast) it just stays in the brake position like when it agitates. at first it was turning slowly but if there was clothes in it there is no way it would turn with that little strength. Anyway i have the thrust bearing kit soaking in the sink with hot water and dawn dish soap to remove the thick mud. If that doesn't work I will definitely try that though...im also going to lubricate the motor glides because they look a bit rusty which may also be causing the washer to do the slow spin, the only thing with the motor glides is that the washer agitates fast as it should so i don't know...just gonna try whatever i can think of before buying a whole new break assembly and thrust bearing. Which would suck because i just had to buy $300 for parts including a new thrust bearing kit less than a year ago. I like the washer but don't know quite how much more money i want to sink into it considering there history.

Contrary to what everyone else thinks

I love these machines, they are very quiet and mine is 8 years old and i will admit it has had to have some repairs but its never given me major problems....the only issue I have with it is that if you don't put something heavy like a towel on top of the agitator on heavy or light wash loads before the spin cycle it will not balance out during the spin cycle. I also don't have any money to buy a new washer especially a Speed Queen (Huebsch in Canada) which usually cost about $900 for a base model. I have also had a direct drive washer and as reliable as they are it was always so noisy and wore out my clothes allot quicker than it should have. It was a used Inglis that was in our house when we moved in and the neutral drain pack was already bad so I sold it for $50 within the first month

There were a HANDFUL of Maytag machines that were labeled "Performa" that were actually Newton built AND Newton Platform (Dependable Care, short stroke transmission) Maytag machines. I have the console of one of these machines that Swestoyz parted out in MY collection of toys! This particular machine was an LAT2500AAE.

Norgechef

Sorry for the harsh post. I just have had NO luck with these things. That Atlantis at my folks house has had problem after problem. The motor and the transmission both went bad in the first 5 years now the timer is bad and the leveling system won't work. Also the Maytag serviceman who I bought the machine and parts from said it was a Newton built machine with the Norgetag trasmission.
All that said these machines do wash and rinse extremely well. It's just too bad they aren't more reliable.

I know what you mean....

Its a shame they didn't redesign the balancing mechanism....because they won't balance out on there own very well. Maybe the older models or Atlantis's were manufactured with less care or effort making them even less reliable....

At first I thought Maybe the transmission spinning for spin would have something to do with it, but I quickly remembered the old Maytag ones (especially the helicals) which can go for YEARS with no issues.

its fixed!

Turned out it was just because the thrust bearing kit was dirty....spins great now! however it kinda smells like burnt food or another strange smell, and i remember that smell coming out of it last year after i fixed a few of the parts and it went away after a few loads, lets hope it goes away and isn't anything serious this time to.
